Willy's Screwed

willy

God
Well guys, took my brother and friend out flukeing. Caught a couple of nice keeps and then the drift died.
Decided to move outside the bay and run down a few miles to a spot I know. Cruising along running like a top.
Then a sudden loss of ower and a loud hard knock. Shut her down right away, pulled the engine cover off, got a hole in the block big enough to put a ping pong ball thru.
Just got done putting close to a grand into all the maintenance on this engine which had now 215 hours on it.
96 Evinrude 200.
Screwed.
Got towed in for an hour and a half by TowBoat.

sorry to hear that willy, i have a friend who works on outboards and he says there is no rhyme or reason why or when they blow. they are all hand grenades just waiting to go off. run it on down to skools and let him have at it.

Oh man Willy that sucks.....really sorry to hear that. I know how much time (and dollars) you've spent getting it all tip top.....

willy, that is terrible news, so sorry to hear that....especially after recent work done. Any clue as to the failure?

Oh man! That's terrible news Willy. I'm so sorry to hear that. I have that same year motor, but the Johnson version with around 400 hours on it.

Were you premixing? If not, could have been the VRO pump failing. That same thing happened to me on my maiden voyage a few years back with the Wellcraft 250 that I eventually sold to Skools. Was cruising along nicely and same thing as you; heard that knock and engine had shut down. Pulled the hood and found a big hole in the block. My stomach dropped down to my feet.

What the? I hate that. I purchased a rebuilt 200 Merc thet let go twice, no windows in the block. Even had a Merc Master Tech put it on the dyno to get the jetting right, timing, the whole 9 yards.. We sized it up right to make sure it was ready the second time. Still stuck a piston at WOT after 20 hours breakin time. Never put a finger on it, gut tells me a bad carb. I feel your pain, bad stuff happens to good folks.
Sometimes sharing the carnage helps to lessen the blow.
You will be back to riding in no time. No hill for a climber...

No idea what happened, every thing was running like a top.
No smoke, no noises until running at normal cruise about 3800 rpm and then splat.
I would think where the hole is I threw a rod. ByGrace that is the same thing you had I guess.
Now I have a big quandary, put a new motor on costing 14-18 thousand for a big block four or two stoke. On a fifteen year old boat? that even after I do it will only be worth about 10 grand.
Take a chance on another used engine that I know nothing about? for who knows how much.
Or spend thousands getting this one with a new power head rebuilt?
I like the new idea but really can't afford it.
I'm not a happy camper right now that is for sure.

Willy...man I feel bad for you right now...gut-wrenching to be sure...but I know you'll dig in and find the right solution...

If you want that 200 that Spare mentioned, I'll bring 'er up to you...

Hey MJ...what became of the Yam you took off yours recently?...that was a pretty good motor and shouldn't be too heavy for Willy's boat...

MJ does have a certain knack for comin' up w/some good used OBs...

The best thing about new...WARRANTY!!...

You'll be throttlin' up soon...I'm pretty sure about that...

I found this on EBAY

not new, but a heck of a lot cheaper.

Could be a good motor, but there's no way to tell for sure; also doesn't say how many hours are on the engine and even if it did, it's difficult to know whether or not the guy is telling the truth (yes, I've become cynical concerning these matters). Also, I think Willy needs a 25" shaft motor (this one is 20"). Guy wants $3500 for it. If I were Willy, for that kind of cash, I'd go the rebuild route and at least try to get some form of a warranty for the work.

sorry to hear Willy what could i say that has not been said.i will tell you one thing if at all possible get a new motor. because who could deserve it more than a man who worked all his life. last chance to go around when you get to our vintage!!!actually you got to be in good shape and health to take torture it gives out.:fight:
