Possible to free up a steering cable from a 1974 V20 will take?

It's not a center console. Trying to get it back on the water, after it sat on the trailer for 3 years, well-tarped. Motor is running, but steering cable is frozen. I'm assuming there's no way to free it up? Hubby and friend pulled it, and it measures 18 ft. Recommendations on replacement?

    V-20 For Sale

Located in Falmouth, MA. 1974 V-20, 1996 115 Evinrude 2-stroke. We've had her for about six years. Great boat, but too large for us. I've solved any issues she had, so now all is well. Solid: transom had been rebuilt before I got her. Entire hull appears to have had gel-coat re-done at...

    Gelcoat Product comments, please

Has anyone tried a product called Presto Gelcoat rejuvinator? It's not for my V; it's for my sailboat. But the people on here have such a wide range of experience, I wanted to ask. The V looks great (and is running great, too, thanks to having cleaned out the saddle tanks). The sailboat, a...

No Explosion: Saddle Tank Cleanout, Part 3.

Hi Everyone, After reading all the posts about dear late Uncle Ernie, and how he tried to vacuum out the gas tank, I just let 'em sit all winter. Then, recently, I opened the tanks, and with a rag screwed to a stick, mopped up the last few drops of sandy gas. Next step: put the shop-vac on...

    Saddle Tank Cleanout Part 2

Hey Folks, Here are some pics of the screens from the siphon tubes. How about those babies? http://picasaweb.google.com/mousatonic/V20TankScreens?authkey=Gv1sRgCJb2l7DrnYm4RA I also replaced the rubber gasket on the gas gauge ring. See it? It's reddish. I used a rod with slender rag...

    Saddle Tanks are out!

Hi folks, After running the rest of the summer on a portable tank, I pulled the saddle tanks so as to clean them out this winter. Here are some pix of the end-of season hose-down. Note the half-broken tab on one of the tanks. I'm glad I pulled the tanks, as I needed to get the crud out from...

It was the battery shutoff switch!

The first summer of our new (1974) V-20 has been a series of afternoons troubleshooting various things. The longest unsolved issue was why the motor (1996 'Rude 115) was having trouble getting its starter to pop up. I thought of putting some viagra in the tank. You'd turn the key and hear...

Screens in siphons: fire prevention or particulate catcher?

We figured out that our sudden power loss was tied to crud clogging the screens at the top of the siphon tubes in the saddle tanks. On this '74 V-20, clearly there's been some accumulation of particulates in the tanks. One of the threads on this site had one of you simply removing the screen...

Our new ('74" V-20 on the water

Hi folks, Thanks for all the help this past winter. I have read all through this site up down and sideways (love those WET reports, too). As our dinghy was named "Tweety"--it's canary yellow--we had to keep the Loony Tunes theme going with the V-20. Here's Pepe, along with a great stick-on...

Help me clear the drain from a well

Hi folks. Counting from the transom: 1. Battery box (with bilge pump); 2. Live well (with pump); 3. Box with clogged drain hole that seems to be open into the starboard interhull space. 4. Box which drains to same space as box # 3. To where does box 3 drain? It seems that it must be...

    My Daughter Finished her Boat!

Refreshing your memory: my ten year old girl asked, for her birthday, "to build a kid-sized rowboat with Daddy." Too good a project to pass up. On the side, I carved her her own set of oars. The pictures show her receiving the oars, then launching the "Phoenix" for its maiden voyage. The...

Who has a good source for Flares?

Hi folks, I went to mail order some flares and a whistle from West Marine. Total: about thirty bucks. Shipping: Another Thirty Bucks. Is this because the goods are explosive, or because WM wanted to?

My current project with my daughter

Some of yas might recall that my daughter, for her tenth birthday, asked to build "a kid sized rowboat with Daddy." I think she's the boy I allus wanted. The project is coming along: seats in, rails on. Next it's a couple corner pieces, then flip her over and glass the seams on the outside...
