    Simple question about tachs.............

Tachs are listed as working on 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 pole outboards. Not to sould like a dumba$$, but what is this exactly relating to and how do I determine How many poles on my outboard? (88' 175) I guess sounding like a dumba$$ is a given now :( Maury

Events from Sunday (no pics, sorry)

Mounted the swim platform Saturday. Went well and looks great. Problem is I now know the exact state of the wood in my transom. Motor flexes the transom so I knew I would have to deal with it before long. It will be a DIY as I've fiberglassed before. Drilled bottom mounting holes and the wood...

Question on mounting the swim platform

My new (used) poly swim platform with three step ladder came in yesterday (thank you ebay). As I don't have any install instructions, can someone give me a rule of thumb on mounting height? Also, are these things mounted with through transom bolts or just screws? Thanks, Maury

NE1 replaced the plastic bushing in your

pedestal seats? I have the original seats and had a bushing fall apart yesterday. Now I have floppy seat. Sad part was the boat was in my driveway. Never made it to the lake because it hasn't stopped raining for two weeks now. Thanks, Maury

    Lumber, I've got another question..............

Kenny, Is your insert for your CD box (the lip that screws on from the outside) the original that came with the boat? The previous owner removed all that for some reason and mounted the seat back directly on to the console. If you take the cushion off there's a hole directly into my console...

    General comment on polishing gelcoat

This probably aught ot be in the repairs section and I'm sure most of you know this, but........ My boats original owner put his wife's name on the side of the boat "Crazy Leta" but removed it prior to my purchase. You could clearly see where the stickers were because of the faded, hazing...

    Pics from Sunday

OK, they're terrible, but it wasn't my fault. It was cloudy with a light rain most of hte day and it was just me and my 6 year old daughter so I was on my own for pics. this was the first run since my motor work (flywheel magnets and carb work). Everything went well. Trailering, launching and...

Got my 88' Dually back from the shop today........

She was running rough on the shakedown cruise two weekends ago. a couple of magnets on my flywheel had come unglued. Very lucky I didn't screw up my magneto (BTY, this is an 88' 175 Johnson). They cleaned it off and reepoxied them back on. Throw in three carb kits and a repaired valve seat and...

    Recommendations on updated gages??

Will probably make updating my gages a priority within the next month or two. Any recommendations on a decent set to buy? Tach, fuel, trim and probably a speedo just for the heck of it. I guess one of the Teleflex sets is affordable, but they make about six or eight different styles. What do you...

Had the shake down cruise Saturday........

....and yes, I forgot to take pics. Put the boat in the intercoastal fot the first time. Note to self: route the steering cable the right way in the helm. Its nice for the boat to turn left when you turn the wheel left! Knew something was amiss coming off the trailer. Had a 1/2" socket in the...

    rust on the steering arm

Can I make the assumption there is enough metal on that steering arm to not worry about the rust that's up under the motor? I've never heard about one of those things breaking and replacing it is more than I want to mess with right now. Maury

    When purchasing a used outboard.................

Folks, I've got a general question. If and when I start looking for a newer motor (read: newer used motor), there are a few questions I have. First, is there a general rule of thumb on the amount of hours a motor has and its relative life span. Or, is it all tied to the compression? For...

    OMC tilt / trim question

I'm pulling the tilt/trim unit on my 175 this weekend in preperation of replacing a leaking seal on the main piston. Isn't there a special tool for removing the top of the unit to replace that seal? Is this something I can accomplish or should I take it to someone? TIA, Maury

who's got the most documented transom repair......

on this site? I have seen many on other sites like Classicmako.com and Classicseacraft.com, but want to see one on a V20. Mine isn't in need of a repair but I just want to see the procedure on one of our boats. Thanks, Maury

    Transom swim platform.......How wide?

A transom mount swim platform will be one of my first DIY projects. They have them all over ebay. Question is what size do I need. I guess I can wait until I have the boat home and measure, but I thought I'd pose the question here. Thanks, Maury
