76 v20

Got a 76 v20 and was wondering how fast it should move with a 78 175hp johnson with a 15x17 prop?

That's sort of a nebulous question because there are so many different factors that can effect it.. How much load are you putting into her (People, fishing gear, ice, gas etc) is the bottom painted? is the engine in good shape? etc etc etc.

My *guess* would be somewhere in the 35-40 mph range... but that's strictly a guess...:head:

Oh, and welcome to the site... pull up a chair and stay a while... post pics of your new baby... we love boat porn here.

lol, will work on getting pics to satisfy the boat fetish, normal load is two people, say about 150lbs of gear( fishing gear and cooler)and about 35-40 gal of gas, the motor runs pretty good. the bottom is not painted. im open to suggestions on anything that will improve fuel economy short of a new engine. i bought the boat to fish the lower chesapeake bay, mainly by the tunnels. another thing i was kinda curious about is the saddlebag gas tanks, are they more or less stable then one in the belly of the boat? im new to owning my own boat, picked the v20 because i watched my father go through about a dozen boats looking for one that suited his tastes, and i gained the knowledge that i wanted the bow flare(scooped waves one to many times in a 20ft bayliner) Just looking to make it as economical as possible without having to buy a new motor.

An older motor like the '78 is gonna pull down some gas at a pretty good clip...not tryin' to be cruel, it's just a fact...I had an old Evinrude that would suck bugs and small birds into the fuel vents at WOT...so don't expect a whole lotta range w/the two saddle tanks...try to keep your RPMs down as much as possible and keep your load light and that's about the best you can do...one day a newer technology motor, but for now, just take 'er out and ENJOY!!...pics when you can...:hi:

You should see about 40 at WOT w/a light load and w/out a top...tops are great, but they are a real drag on fuel economy and speed...

Just had a crazy thought, got a chance to get an old jetski, runs good but the hull is busted bad, wonder if that motor could be rigged where the bilge is as a backup motor/trolling motor, its just an old standup one person jetski, so wondering if that would push it, or what size outboard would make a good oh **** motor or to just use for trolling during striper season so i can conserve gas
