Bad News!

I got a call today that International Paper Franklin Mill is closing. I was employed by Union Camp Corp for 19 1/2 years as a logger when they shut down the logging job and I was hired into the mill. In 1999 IP bought us out just as hurricane Floyd flooded the mill. Ive worked my way up the ladder, finally reaching my lifelong goal as a Millwright on the first of this year. Today they snatched the rug right out from under me. I've been on the phone and net all day trying to find something I can do with no luck. Jobs are scarce here. I live 30 min from the Va. line, and have called the shipyards but havent had any luck. Im not sure how much longer Ill have a job there, could be only a few weeks. If any of you fellas close by know of ANYTHING please let me know. Thanks
Carroll F.

Carroll, I'm really sorry to hear that. I have a number of friends and relatives in similar situations, and may face the same situation myself in 2010 if things don't improve.

I hope you're able to find something very soon. Keep looking -- there's bound to be someone who wants to hire a self motivated person.

Good luck to you Felton, I am seeing it all over, in my family too. Said a little prayer for you and your family

Man I'm sorry, when I heard it on the news I thought of you. My wife lost her job thursday week ago after 30yrs there, so were feelin your pain.

Harvey's point over in Hertford, the guy who runs the private company that does maintance is hiring some guys, you need heavy equip experience.

Also I'll ask my brother; he runs the maintance dept of a concrete company in Chesapeake.

You never know maybe something will turn up.

Thanks fellas!! Thanks for the prayers too! The company is in effects bargaining now and it looks like I might have only 2 weeks left or I could go on till Dec 31. Its really sad to see that mill go down like this and all my friends lose their jobs.
Thanks Lee, I have a friend that works at the Harvey's point facility. Its pretty close to my house, maybe 30 mins away at the most. I've operated heavy equipment all my life (skidders, loaders, tree cutters, cranes, manlifts, forklifts ect.). I can operate anything that moves, and I've got a CDL license. Thanks in advance for asking for me! A job that close would be great!

Good luck...I gotta feelin' a guy w/your background won't be idle long...may turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to ya!!...

I'm sorry to hear about that C. I might be in the same "boat" before too much longer as well. GMAC Insurance just sold their "personal lines" which is the branch I work for, to a private company out of New York. They are going to beef up their system and move all of our business to their system, so needless to say they already have IT people supporting their system which means a lot of people around here are going to get thier pink slips in about a year or two - maybe sooner, maybe later.

I agree with what Reel said, from the sounds of it you have a lot of experience and I know there is something out there to suit you well. We have no choice but to play the cards we are dealt - folding is not an option!

From a fellow Carolina boy, best of luck to you sir!!!!!

sorry to hear of this for both of you. C and BR keep your heads up. I don't know much your way open as in jobs but BR you're in IT right that tough since Dell just layed off 900 poeple in our area.

I heard this last week and just wondered what will happen to the town of Franklin. Keep your head up and keep looking as good thing come to good people/workers.

Yes, these are troubled times. I am back at the company that I started working for in 1979. They layed me off back about 5 years ago, it was pretty tough, but then hired me back. During the 80's we had about 3k people, last year 100 and now we are down to 22 and still dwindling. Not sure if we are ever going to make that corner that keeps looking further away.

Keep on "networking for a job" where ever you go and what ever you do. Always carry a resume or business card.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks fellas, Iv got a few nibbles so far. The company hasn't given us any release dates or worked out any details yet! This time in limbo is extremly stressful on all of us!! I hate to be seperated from all my friends at work and I know that last day is gonna be gut wrenching but I'm ready to get another job started and settle in there. I hope this is the last time I have to go through this!!
Garage's brother might have a spot for me , but I dont know if they will release me in time to get a chance at it. I've got off Friday and I'm gonna go to Norfolk Naval Shipyard and Newport News Shipyard and apply there too. I applied at Gregory Poole (Catapillar) Marine Division today. That would be great to work on Marine diesels on charter boats. I'll just have to wait and see what comes along. :oh:
I feel sorry for all the businesses in Franklin Va. they're really gonna suffer!

I havent brought this up lately but Dec 31 was my last day of work at International Paper Corp after 32 years. I've filled out tons of paperwork, been to lots of meetings and called and talked to hundreds of people trying to find a good job. The first place I called was Nucor Steel in Hertford NC which is only about 25 miles from my house. At this mill they melt scrap steel and make plate steel out of it. They called back last week and wanted to give me an interview. I studied over all my material and tech books and prepared myself for the worst. I went for the (extremely stressful) interview Friday and just got the call that I've been selected to go on to the next step of the process. After this, I'm supposed to fly to Cleveland Ohio for a psyc interview. This Co. really does their homework on their employees. It seems to be a very good company to work for. A few of my friends work there and speak highly of it. Have any of you heard anything about them? Good Luck to anybody else in the same boat!!

DONT MENTION YOUR BOAT ADDICTION!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, good luck on the job hunt, that sounds like a good place to work if they go to that much trouble in the hireing process.

We will keep praying for you.

Of course you could kick back and collect unemployment for a while and get some serious fishing in.

Good luck cfelton!! Hope all goes well. But I am not to sure that stating, "Good Luck to anybody else in the same boat!!" gets the right point across in this forum. lol

Seriously, we all wish you the best!

Yea man Good Luck, I hope something works out for you. If it doesn't pan out maybe the company my brother works for will have something open up.
