Big problem and need advice

The mechanic officially pronounced my Yammie V6 150 as DOA. I won't even begin to tell you what I have spent buying her, getting her hauled to California, upgrades, repainting.... The boat ran for a total of ~15 miles before the old outboard croaked.

I'd love to repower with a 4 stroke but that ain't gonna happen any time soon.

I have the opportunity to buy another late '80's V6 Yamaha for ~ $600. Problem is that it's a 250 hp instead of a 150. Seems like overkill to the point of being life threatening. I see this as a temporary fix until I can get 'er repowered in the next year or two.

I need some opinions... Is the 250 hp feasible or am I gonna get myself killed?

If you plan on insuring it, especially in Calif., you may have trouble.  The highest hp rating on an outboard V20 was 235 .  Some year boats were as low as 200 hp.  I don't know what year Yammy you have, but you might want to check with MJ as he has a 150 for sale. Good luck.

weight is going to be roughly 500 lbs, depending on the model you have now anywhere from 50 to 100 lbs heavier than what you have now, its still lighter than a Yamaha four stroke 200/225 by about 100 lbs. If you want ot see how your boat will set, just walk to the back of the boat at rest, you'd be suprised how little it changes. The biggest problem I have with the 250's is they drink fule like there is no end, and if its a carb model ,the fuel inrichner circut can give problems, just make sure teh 250 is checked out prior to purchasing. BTW, what exactly is wrong with your current motor?

Yes I sold my 150, its a waiting pick up as we speak.

250 won't kill you as long as you don't opener her up all the way
They like to drink gas but as long as you don't get on it I think it will be ok.
500 # off the back will be a bit more then you want but heck if this iis the only way you can get in the water I say do it!

Just have the motor ck out!! I bought a 175 Evinrude last summer for 700 and so far I am ok, knock on wood!!

Good luck!

Thanks guys. The weight was a concern cuz I already have the 15hp kicker hanging on there.

I'll consider other options.

Seems 175 - 200 is the size to have. My 175 pushes my dually plenty fast. I've seen some folks with single v-4's - that I don't understand. Way to underpowered for me. I'm sure you'll come across a used carbed Yammy for cheap $$. The 250 will drink the gas if you open her up and insurance will be a problem if you go that route. I say hold out for the right size motor (but $600 isn't bad to get you back on the water quick)

just my .02

The mid 80's Yammi 250's were slower than the 225's and used twice the fuel. I wouldn't do that.

Whats wrong with the one you have?

If we pool our mind power, I bet we can get it fixed.

If the original mechanic had pooled his mind power maybe he would have noticed the disconnected wire from the temperature sensor. ???

It was wedged neatly into an area where it sorta kinda looked connected.  Anyone smoking crack could have made the same mistake.

is it a 250 V6? if so not a problem but if it's a V8 no it will be to heavy, there have been a few with 250's and 275's on them for sell on ebay so it will be fine as long as it's a V6

I guess it all depends on where you fish or what you use your boat for. There is a guy around here that has a V20 with a 70 yamaha. I am sure it is slow but he gets around. He is having more more fun then the guys on the pier!

Wellcraft sold them with 130 and 115's new.

You are correct Deshet and contrary to what Flounder stated the 115 V4 works very well and especially on a bracket. 35-37 mph full load and three guys along with full bimini and enclosure. Plus it sips fuel even wide open.
But I would suggest Tuna you look for a 150 V6 as being the ideal all around. I have seen too many V's with a heavy engine on it and IMHO it is not the way to go for multiple reasons .

Thanks guys.  The wife and I have decided to bite the bullet and repower with a new Suzuki 140.

I'm not sure she believes it's a good idea but I've been whining so much that I think it's worth 10G to her JUST TO SHUT ME UP!
