Broken Skeg

My friend has a 90 HP Merc.
Somehow :head::head::head:(dumb move that I won't explain):bat::sleep::sleep: the skeg got broken off.
Everything is fine, no oil leaks or other damage,
just a pretty clean break.
I know it is cast, but can it be reconnected by brazing or welding?

Yes a competent welder can tig another piece on. Opinions vary but The last one I had done only cost $75 bucks, then I had to fair and paint. My guy ran water thru the lower to keep from burning up the seals. If it is broken off too close to the gearcase the Skegguard may not work. If that is the case I think they recommend taking all the guts out of the housing and replacing the entire skeg where it attaches to the bullet. They sell new skegs for that purpose.

Thanks for the answers.
This verifies my plan, have the piece we saved welded on,
I do all the clean up work, i.e. grinding and painting,
then cover with a skeg guard.

Chum, that is step two, because the very tip of the skeg was lost.

Ridge, that is good news and I hope that the shop I use knows of a good welder.
They should as it is in Lewes, De., I am sure this will not be the first time they have seen this.

They can be welded... I am a welder and have done many for a local boat shop. The material looks poor, however it TIG welds pretty well.. I have repaired them with 6061, 5052, 3003 aluminum with NO problems.. good luck. Ship it to me and i can fix for you if you like!
