Cranking Amps...

Hey guys, I'm in the process of buying a couple new batteries. Do any of you happen to know how many cranking amps are necessary for my 96 200HP Johnson Oceanrunner? Would 625MCA and 500CCA do the job well?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I use 750's in my boat but the marina that I had my service done says I had low voltage codes on my motor because of it, he said 1000 is what they should be.
I have always used 750 with no problems till these codes, and I am not changing the brand new battery's now so will get 1000 next time.

The biggest you can fit in there, those cranking amps are based on ideal conditions, full charge etc. The V6's use a lot on start up and especially when cold. So the most you can get in the group size battery you can fit in there is my advise.

Thanks guys. I'm going to take Spare's advice and get the Deka 24M7 over at West Marine (a little pricey at $120 each, but not outrageous like those Optimas and Odysseys). I've read a number of good things about those batteries. So, I'll buy the 24M7 starting battery and a Dual Purpose Battery also made by Deka to run all my electronics...

Another question I have is this... While underway, I take it that the battery selector switch should be set to "All/Both". Once anchored should the selector be changed to the number 2 battery or is it supposed to stay on both?

i set it so the starting battery is off when anchored, this way i can kill the other and have the starting amp when i need to start

check into a battery combiner, west has them. Tehy allow both batteries to be charged on one circut, under high map draw or low voltage, the combiner breaks the circut. When you need the extra voltage, just turn the battery switch to all(run with the engine battery only), the house battery will be fully charged
