That's a great story. Reminds me of an acquaintance of mine who caught a 60 pound striper in his canoe.

Remarkable, if not a little crazy. Fishin the hump off the Florida keys is mostly done with jigs, live bait and big drone type spoons, mostly vertical.
 
That is a serious fish from any boat. I don't know how you'd put enough drag on a tuna to slow it down from a kayak. A fish that size should easily plane the kayak out in any direction it wants to go if you're using 50 pound tackle. I regularly use my Ocean Kayak here to fish for redfish near the breakwaters. A 30 pound redfish takes my "Yakboard" kayak wherever it wants to, can't imagine the ride with a tuna. It's hanging in the storage building till the weather gets nice, tried it in pretty big surf and hung onto the rod but lost the paddle.
