General comment on polishing gelcoat

This probably aught ot be in the repairs section and I'm sure most of you know this, but........

My boats original owner put his wife's name on the side of the boat "Crazy Leta" but removed it prior to my purchase. You could clearly see where the stickers were because of the faded, hazing gelcoat. I started with 1000 grit and moved to 1500, 2000 and ended with 2500 before moving to the porter cable buffer with some of the 3m gelcoat polish. No more Crazy Leta. I'd post a pic but its really hard to see the difference with the camera. I mean it SHINES!. Problem is, now I have to do the rest of the boat. One thing it brings out is that boat is truly a light shade of grey (the 88's anyway). Always considered it white, but that was from the oxidation.

I remember seein' a boat color once in a catalog called Wellcraft White and you're right ... it was a light, light(and maybe even another light) gray ...

Found this from "Bisghrimpin" from back in 03'

"In case anyone needs to buy these colors for a 1988 v20 steplift, the hull color is glacier gray and the floor color is phantom gray."

Wow Flounder, you really cleared my head. I always thought my 88 looked a little gray. Where did you get the 1000-2000 grit sand paper. I got a 5" 8-hole hook and loop sander but no luck finding grits above 400.

ALL wetsanding by hand up through 2500. I can feel what's under the paper and know if I'm doing more harm than good. I buy my packs of paper off ebay.

I know, I know, fish guts make it look better. Back in my youth and the days of my first V-20, my wife and I would get it plenty dirty (with fish guts that is) . Many a gulf snapper and mahi mahi made it into the boat. If you've ever caught a small mahi mahi (chicken dolphin), you know what bleeding is. They hit the boat and let loose. From your knee caps down is red.

Those were the days!
