thinking about buying a v20 love the layout and design but have not rode in one yet, just cusious about the ride have heard they pound somewhat ,can anyone explain what this means
 
Never met a boat yet that doesn't pound in some sea condition or another...you won't find a 20' hull that cuts a chop better than the V20...uh oh...now the seacrets out...I should be lead out and shot...
 
Well when you learn how to use the trim & tilt the thing rides like a dream!  ;D

All boats pound!! If someone tells you different then they are lien!!

Some may drive a little better in a chop, but wait till you stop and have to fish in that same chop!! You will be CHUMMING fast!!

Some ride great and roll in a sea, some ride like crap and are steady in the sea!

I think the V20 is about the best mix in the Market!! I have been in 6 footers with it before, and I will tell you there are not any other 20 foot boat I would want to be in when the sea's kick up!!

I have stayed out way longer then I should have in the past cause I didn't feel like the sea was starting to kick! The V20 is so stable floating in the water!!

Ask around you will find the truth!! And you will be back!

And watch for the guys that say they are so old!! They have not made them since the 90's, But I have a 1975 and I love it !
 
Yes to all of the above. Had my first ride in a V20 in 1985 couldn't afford a new one then. 19 years later when I was ready to move up the only boat I wanted was The Wellcraft V20. I now own my 19 year dream. Buy one you will not be sorry! Bill Mc
 
I echo all of the above, and add that there's a reason that so many hold the V-20 hull in such high regard. When I first moved to the coast I spoke to as many "old timers" as I could about what kind of boat to get in the 20' range. More said "V-20" than all others combined. My experience in the past 15 years has confirmed what they said, and that's why I spent a small fortune restoring/re-fitting mine.

Keith Boyd described the v20 as a "wave dancer" and I really can't think of a better way to describe the ride.
24 - 27mph is the sweet spot.

The one and only recipe (that I know of ) for making hull slap in the v20:

Step one: add quartering seas (big chop)
Step two: distribute the weight such that it's grossly uneven ( i.e. three people are on one side)
Step three: increase speed to 25mph

When all these conditions are met . . . it's possible to come down a little hard on the heavy side of the V and generate hull slap.

If you keep the weight distributed evenly or use trim tabs to level the boat (when it's not) you'll avoid this rare occurance.
 
Agree to all of the above. Just zeroed out the GPS and had run 1411 nautical miles last year. I felt like the ride was great, as half of those were in the ocean.
