Merc 700

Hey, you mechanical types!

I have a couple of issues with my new motor.

(1962 Mercury 700 with gears)

No water ever came out the pee hole however some water was comming out of the exhaust relief on the back of the midsection. (I am going to check for bugs/trash clogging the pee hole)

Water was also running out of the area around the top motormount........pretty sure thats not good.

So I think it was pumping water, but it was not getting to where it needed to go.

Any suggestions?

Secondly, I want to make sure I lined things up right when I put on the timing belt.

There is a line on the flywheel and an arrow on the dist. pulley. I lined those up.

The cover on the top of the dist. pulley also had a line on it but it was not at the same place as the arrow on the actual pulley. I assume it is used to adjust timing advance.

How'd I do?

Yep......its white.

Randleman, I know a guy in Youngsville that could probably rebuild everything on that motor in his sleep, problem is, he would probably shoot you for dragging it on his property. Good luck finding someone to work on it. You might be able to come up with an easier solution. I saw a guy rebuild an older glaspar one time, he found a later model inline Merc that used a shiftable lower unit, power trim and cdi type ignition. He kept the older cowls, painted the newer motor white. No one knew it was a newer motor, he could find parts and service for the newer engine. He keept the older motor in his shed, just in case

I am not afraid to work on it, I just don't know what I'm trying to fix with the water issue. I am going to get a service manual for it and go from there. Like I've said before, I am not much of a mechanic, but I am a heck of a parts changer.

That is a good idea on the modern motor under the old cowl. If I decide to get REAL correct with the boat, it will need a 1968 motor......this one is too old.

Actually, I have had an offer to buy the motor over on S&F, someone wants it because it is a short shaft. I should probably sell it and buy an 84-86 90 hp for it and be done with it.

But I love a challenge so I will tinker with it til it's right, or I mess it up beyond repair.

hey a have several boxes of old Merc parts. you would have to come dig thur them to find what ya want. not sure what any of the part numbers fits and don't really care lol. Alot of it is even before they were Merc. back in the KF days.

Thanks Hammer, I don't think they would be compatable.

You should sell that thing over on Scream and Fly, they love to buy and sell lower units over there.

After asking questions on several different boards about this motor, it would seem that I did the belt correctly.

I also was able to open the "tell tale" (pee hole). It took several hours of poking with various wires and zip ties, digging out the 40 years worth of dirt stuck in there. I finally broke it loose yesterday using penetrating oil and compressed air.

That motor starts as good as my 2003 Johnzuki 4 stroke.
