Well my AC compressor went yesterday. Im good on knowing what to do and going to replace everything but one thing Im seeing online is due to disimiliar metals at the rear evaporator on these rear air models the write up I seen said 99% of the time you destroy the hard lines under the truck at the rear connectors. Anyone delt with this? Does this mean I have to replace the hard lines going under the truck AND the rear evap? I certainly wouldn't thing flushing all that would be a good idea with a compressor failure.
 
The frozen line issue is a bigger problem with the lines at the condenser than the rear A/C. Does your TAHOE have rear A/C? I thought only the BURBS got the rear A/C in them, and the TAHOE only had a rear heat option. I take it your compressor has crapped out on you? If so BEWARE of reman units. I put a SANDEN replacement on mine when I did it, but have recently started using GLOBAL. If your compressor is just leaking, I would replace the compressor and drier and call it a day. I can pretty much guarantee you the lines at the condenser will be frozen on it as I have yet to see one that wasn't. So long as the compressor didn't grenade, you should be alright reusing the condenser, but the new replacements are more efficient.
 
Yes ferm that's what I meant, the rear condenser...Yes it has rear AC and the compressor is locked up. Clutch spins with ac off but when AC button is pushed it shuts the motor down when clutch engages. So with I have to replace the lines from rear condenser to fire wall?
 
If the compressor froze up, then yes your going to have to replace the condenser, and most likely that hose assembly hooks up to it. Also your not going to like this one, but if it sent debris through the system then you need to pull the rear A/C unit out and change the screen in the expansion valve. These compressors don't normally lock up, but it sounds like you got bit by the classic dual air bug. With dual air you must always run both units when the A/C is on. normally what kills teh compressor is when you run the A/C and don't turn the fan on for the rear unit. this causes it to close off the rear expansion valve since the rear A/C isn't running, and oil gets trapped in the rear A/C line. Once enough oil gets trapped in there the compressor eventually runs dry and locks up. GM knows about this issue, and came out with a revised expansion valve for it. I don't envy you at all as your going to HATE doing this job.
 
Alright, just got back with all parts except underside hoses, dealer part, 140 and 130 apiece.

I also bought the replacement top AC hose assembly for the top end. In theory if I decided to abandon the rear AC and return this hose for a front AC only truck would it work? I also wonder how it would cool in this south Alabama heat?
 
if you only have passengers in the mid seat, should be ok. if you have all the seats in, might get stuffy in the very back.
 
Most TAHOES don't have the rear A/C, and they even made BURBS without it. It will take awhile to cool down in the back, but otherwise you'll be fine. You can try and break the lines free and see if they are frozen first. And don't forget to replace the condensor. When the compressor goes it sends metal into the condensor, and your 99 most likely still has the old flat style condenser that cannot be flushed out and must be replaced.
 
Yeah Ferm i know...got the front and ordered the rear. Gonna go ahead and do the rear as well. It sure does cool good in the upper nineties down here when it works right

Here's a thought...... what about flushing it out and adding in a filter on the return line?

years ago the compressor died in the folk's home a/c unit so when I installed the new compressor I put filters on both pressure and return line and they have had no issues... Can't see any reason the same theory couldn't apply to a mobile system too.
 
Well Ferm, I thought I would update you, all went well I got Ice cold AC. I done just the front and used the plugs ordered online to plug off the back. :sun:
 
Glad you got it!! I have not been able to check my AC in the New to me Tahoe yet, its going to snow tonight! I also have rear AC??

Yeah Ferm and Phatty were right about not having to have the rear air. Even thought its not real hot here it yet it was about 80* this weekend and I ran it really low and it got really cold in the cabin.
 
They used to sell the SUBURBANS with only front air and they worked just fine. As cold as mine gets I couldn't imagine that much cooling in a smaller vehicle.
