Need Yamaha part or new Engine!

so I finished all of my "planned" winter projects for the boat and went to take it out for the first time and have a new issue...

My 89 Yamaha 130 is choosing when it wants to and doesn't want to start....apparently my CDI unit is failing....it is randomly not sending voltage to the coils.

long story short...I either need to find a used CDI unit somewhere....spend 500-600 bucks for a new CDI unit....or buy a new engine

Brian, can you find the part used to save a few bucks? I've owned two V20's and repowered one. In 2006, I replaced an 86 150 Merc with a 2000 150 Merc Saltwater. Motor only had 125 hrs on it. If you install a new motor and decide to sell, you'll never come close to recovering your investment. Find a good used motor and enjoy the boat. Just my $.02.

When you say CDI do you mean the main computer brain? I have a 225 but I think the guts are the same. Did you try disconnecting and re-routing the A-B wiring harness as shown on the sticker?

Yeah I didn't mean buy a brand new engine....just a new to me engine......but after calling every used parts store in the southeast....I finally found a place that had a used unit that he is going to sell me for $100!! It helped when I found out that I could use the same unit from all the 1980s 115s and 130s. Feels like a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. Now I just hope the mechanic diagnosed it right and this fixes the issue!!!

Stuarbc,
Maybe I`m shooting from the hip, but a friend told me that some Yamaha`s have failures on a water temp sensor which is mounted on the head/s and causes the motor to not start. That is an easy check, perhaps you could look into that.
I have the OEM service manual for my 98 200 yami and if it could be of any help i can look on it and give you info.

I fooled around with this for an entire year.....trying to convince myself that the CDI was the problem and it was worth buying the part. I finally convinced myself of it and was able to find a company called RepairCDI that manufactures CDIs and sells them on BoatFix.com for much cheaper.

Purchased on Thursday...received on Friday....installed in 5 minutes....boat has run perfectly ever since!!!! Can't wait for the summer now!
