Floor hatches made of composite deck material

Glued up with Gorilla Glue and screwed together with stainless #10 x 2" long flathead screws. These hatches are so solid I was amazed. Cost of material,$21.00 for composite material,$10.00 in SS screws.

I have added more pictures in my gallery of the floor re-do process and results. I have been wanting to do this for two years now and I am so glad it's finaly done. I wish to thank all those who inspired me with their floor painting projects. Durback is some great stuff and without you guys here I would have never known of it's existance. Thanks so much guys!
 
Looks great.. how "gritty" is the Durback. can you walk on it barefooted comfortably? or can you control how aggressive the texture is? i'v got a 13 ft whaler that the gelcoat is crazed with spidercracks everywhere. i have painted it a couple of times and it looks ok, but eventually wears off. i was wondering about using the durback to cover & hide the cracks. do you think it would work? also how much did you use to cover the deck?lotta questions, i know

Looks great!! and the hatches are like originals great idea!

The paint come smooth or textured get what you want, the textured would be a bit tuff on bare feet for sure!

One gallon got me two coats with a little leftover for spot touch up's. The consistancy of the paint is controlled by the type of roller Duraback supplies, they send you two rollers. You would get more then enough paint for a 13 ft Whaler. It does cover the spider cracks awesome and in time I will see if they come back through. As for walking barefoot on it, I actually found it nice to walk on barefoot whereas my wife said it was hurting her feet. Personally I didn't find it that bad to walk barefoot on but, I don't think I would want to be barefoot all day walking on it. As for "how gritty", I seriously doubt anyone will slip now on my boat deck, great stuff.

I wanted so badly to go with the Sea Board but the cost was outrageous. The cheapest I could find was two pieces on Ebay which would have cost me $131.00 plus shipping cost of $25.00. I actually got the idea for the decking boards on here believe it or not. Someone posted a picture of a guy who did the entire floor with decking boards and that's when the lightbulb went on in my head! It was so inexpensive to make and just my time to cut to length and put together. They are rugged as heck, there was two of us fatties standing on one hatch and it never budged. Somewhat on the heavy side but it is what it is as they say.

So thanks guys for the comments and this website is the best!

I can't see your pics but I get the gist...composite deck boards would make great floor hatches!! I never even thought of that! I bet it looks great and like you said cheaper and just as durable as star/seaboard.

I did the same to my deck, that Durabak is awsome and it does not bother the bare feet....not mine anyway. Yours looks cleaner than mine. I didn't have many major spider cracks to begin with and I think that my deck will surely outlive the boat!

That's what I love about this place...someone's always comin' up w/another way to skin a cat!!...those hatch-lids look GREAT and I bet they don't heat up like my grey Starboard does...good work, Shawsee:clap:
