Painting Rod Boxes

The rod boxes on my '84 V20 are horrible looking, and replacing them is not financially feasible right now. I successfully repaird all the cracks and holes with expoxy and fiberglass, and the external portion now has a nice even surface.

Has anyone used Krylon Fusion paint on them to restore the appearence? I figured it is a paint specifically made for plastic, and since the boxes are not abused by foot traffic it should work.
 
Thanks Joe, your project looks great! I figured since the Fusion is made for plastic, it might bond better than the Rustoleum.
 
I may suggest wiping them down with laquer thinner on them first--then apply the krylon Fusion paint.
 
I used the Krylon Fusion paint...the only problem I had (which would probably happen with any kind of paint) is that when I load my boat in a hurry it can lean slightly to one side (just realized my rollers are not even spaced which is causing this but havent fixed it yet) with the boat slightly listing water collects in the rear bottom corner of one rod box and sits there for quite a while...peeled the paint off that corner in no time. Other than that it seems to be holding up real well.

The peeling paint is really not a major problem as it can be easily touched up. In my particular case I am keeping the boat on a lift, and the self drains are plugged when in the water.

Do you think roughing up the surface of the rod box with sand paper will help in paint adhesion?

Great job by the way, I especially love the recessed drink holders. Where did you get them?

Perhaps a new subject should be started as a "How To" with only Completed Mods present, no questons beyond the original post.

It would include pictures and text of how it was done, and the materials used (with links). The original threads would remain, but this way, a member could search the list more concisely.

Please keep up the great work.
 
Thanks! I wound up using Rustoleum plastic spray paint, because my Home Depot does not carry the Krylon brand. It seems to have come out well, and I will post pictures as soon as my camera is fixed!
