Pump Question?

I have a '91 V-20 Cuddy with a large fish box in the floor between the seats. It had a pump of some kind mounted between the fish box and fuel tank but was removed for some reason. I checked the wiring and found that a switch on the console would control the pump. What type of pump should be used here? I assume the inlet would hook to the fish box and the outlet to overboard. I only use this space for storage now, but may need it for fish someday. I would really like to find more info on this boat for reference.

You could probably use a livewell recirculation pump or they also make bilge pumps that can be mounted vertically in a through hole. Probably a lot better than bailing out all the water that well can hold by hand. Actually, the ideal pump to use would be a macerator pump in case fish scales are sucked up, it won't destroy the pump. With a little ingenuity, you could come up with some sort of filter to put on the end of the suction hose to prevent the crap from being sucked into the pump. That way the cheaper livewell or bilge pumps will work and also last longer.

Gotta go take a snooze now before my 12 hour shift starts in a little while. :-[

Sounds like you need 2 pumps, because your livewell is below the floor.

On my v21 the well is above the floor.
The supply pump is a bilge pump sitting on top of a ball joint shut off valve on top of a bronze thru hull fitting. My box drains thru the side of the hull by gravity since it is above deck.

You probably need another bilge pump to empty your well since it is below deck. I don't know if one special pump can do both in and out, but I would use 2 separate pumps to keep things simple, safe and cheap - but that's just me. ;D

Hope this helps.

To pumps would be easier, but you could run the fill hose a drain hose to the same pump as long as you use shut offs to devert the water were you want it to go.

But by the time you bought the hose and all the shut offs it would have been cheaper to just get another pump.

I misunderstood. I thought you were just looking for a pump to empty the well. Didn't realize you also wanted to fill it with a pump too. I was just thinking about a friends V20 with the big well in the floor. He fills it with a bucket when he needs water in there, then uses a livewell pump to empty the well when he's finished or wants to change the water.

I don't need to fill the well, just empty it. I would use it more for fish and ice than as a live well. Fish scales, slime and water would need to be pumped out. Thanks for the ideas.
