Putting hole in console

I have to drill into my console to fix and replace the horn switch. I hate drilling into the console cause if I make a mistake there is no turning back. I did make a panel with the switch to cover the hole but I just don’t like making holes into it. Is the console thick? I have to make a square hole. I’m going to use a multi tool. What do you think 🤔

how big of a hole? I cut holes in boat dash all the time, no big deal, measure twice, mark once, recheck your measurements, cut to fit. If you use a hole saw, spin it backwards, takes a bit longer, but wont grab, and or chip the gel. I normally use my bosch jig saw when cutting anything thats not round. Drill a couple starter holes and use teh jig saw to cut to the line

If you use a jigsaw, get a down cutting blade. They’re made for cutting holes in Formica countertops without lifting chips. If you use your multitool, make a template from plywood or something, with the same size hole as you want, to guide the tool and keep it from wandering outside of where you want the hole. Fairly thin material, taped down really well works great for me, cutting in electrical boxes.

Thanks for the reply’s I feel better The hole is a small square hole. Maybe 3/4. X 1 1/4.
Don’t think I’m afraid of cutting holes but I want to make sure I’m doing it an$ putting it in the right spot. I would hate to do it then say. Dam. I should hav3 put it in a different spot. I like the hole saw blade turning it in the opposite direction direction to start it. That’s good information. I have all the tools. I just want to do it right the first time. That’s why I always ask.
