well after 5 months of hell and $1200+ later...my 1990 120hp force runs again! ;D ...from 3 different mechanics that couldnt fix it or knew what was wrong and charged me anyway, to buying new and used parts from ebay, to me learning from a manual and getting help from here,THT, iboats and the marine doctor...she runs again!!:)

some things i have changed or done... rebuilt carbs, rebuilt fuel pump, new rectifier, new trigger, new stator, used ignition coils, new flywheel key(sheared it cuz i didnt torque flywheel)...my tach still dont work though :-/

anyway..i just got home from going drop it in water, left it on trailer though ....runs like a champ..starts right up and sounds great..adjusted carbs to spec... i let it run for atleast 25mins or so....i was gonna sell it but after hearing it run i think i'm just gonna keep it fish it and double up on my truck payments, pay it off and then buy a new boat.

gonna do some decarbing and other small things this week and hopefully by the weekend i'll have some blood and guts on deck!!

Way to go Kajun. You are now qualified to start working as a full time Mercury outboard mechanic. Congrats!

lol i should!! but i'm going to sea for 2 months in 2 weeks....so i'm just gonna fish as much as i can ....i think i will put it in paper for what i got into it.. if it sells before i leave great..if not...i'll decide when i get back.

:( i spoke too soon lol brought it to the water this morning to take her out and do alil fishing before work...started her up on trailer and let warm up...then turn it off to dunk her......parked truck..came back and started her up...i was looking back at engine as i started it and noticed no water shooting out back!!!.. turned her off.....started it a few more times hoping it would start shooting water again...no deal!...trailered back home......

i'm in the middle of taking off lower unit now, taking a dinner break.. i'm guessing it was all the sand on that ramp...its a brand new ramp and its thick with sand...this water pump and housing is brand new.. no hours on it...just yesterdays running.....thats what gets me.

macojoe...i'm taking your advice and selling as soon as i can!!! lol

I've had crystalized salt deposits (or maybe sand, who knows?) stop up the pisser right where the water comes out. I took a small piece of wire and pushed it out - good as new.

This happened the day after I had replaced my impeller. I took the lower unit off twice to check my work and it still wouldn't pee. That's when I decided to run wire down the tell tell. Once I did that - good as new!

Then I had another motor that had the dirt dobbers in it!

I just hope you are not taking your lower unit off for no reason. They aren't fun to be taking off and putting back on all the time.

How long did you let it run? The reason I ask is on those Johnson 140's I had (Skools has em now ;)) it takes a while for the water cooling chamber to fill up before it'll pee. I was concerned after one had ran 30 seconds and still no pee. Come to find out that was normal.

Also, on these Mercury's don't forget what BigShrimpin said about the poppet valves. It takes more time for a Mercury to pee than other brands!

Good luck!

started her up on trailer and let warm up...then turn it off to dunk her
Kajun, This sentence confuses me. Do you mean you backed the trailer in the water, then started it up?

Then, with the engine off you unloaded from the trailer and parked it at the dock?

yup blue runner..i started her on trailer to warm up..everything fine......then i turned it off.. launched and then went park truck...came back no water shooting out...

update...took off lower unit inspected everything...everything looks brand new...just like its supposed too..since it is brand new...new gaskets..new impeller...new pump housing..i flushed it out anyway...ran water hose up everywhere water goes and flushed it out...water flow was fine everywhere......went to put it back on and realized that part is gonna take awhile..so i had to shut down to go to work.. might try to finish up tonight...i seen nothing out of the ordinary that would have caused this.....we'll see if she spits tommorow lol

yup blue runner..i started her on trailer to warm up..everything fine
When you say "everything fine" do you mean she was peeing fine? If not has it every peed since you did the work? And my final question is, how long did you let it run before shutting it down due to no pee?

The only other thing I know that would cause it not to pee with a new impeller is if you twist the impeller into the housing the wrong way.

Sorry for all the questions but I want to help you avoid doing some of the stupid things I've done in the past.
And I also would like to see you get out on the water sometime soon!

when it was on the trailer warming up...it was peeing great.....yesterday it peed great for the whole time i let it run.. like 25mins...when i got home last night..i flushed it on hose...peed fine again....today.....on trailer during warm up..peed fine...when i launched it and parked truck..the came back to boat and started it...thats when it didnt pee....i didnt let it run very long 20 secs or so...but long enough that i noticed that it was unusual...meaning usually its peeing by this time...

When I had a merc, that plastic pee thing got pluged all the time!
Took off the cover disconect and pee just fine!!

After the third time I drilled it out to as big a hole I could and it still fit the hose, Never had a problem after that!!

i know exactly what the problem here is. ther is only one way to repair a force... remove and replace! seriously, you should double check that pisser to make sure it not clogged. you also might wanna check the half moon key between impeller and shaft. if you installed it upside down it might work for a while then start slipping. not likely but possible. i know some people have run force engines with no probs. these are the lucky few. if you have one that gives you trouble, go ahead and invest in another engine or, at least, a good paddle.

well it works now lol..whew... took it apart and inspected it...seen nothing wrong with it....got off work early tonight and came home and had a buddy help me get the lower unit back on..(what a pain in the arse)..we struggled for atleast an hour trying to get it lined up lol...finally got it...i changed lower unit oil while i was at it... hooked up earmuffs and she started peeing just fine...gonna take her out again tommorow and hopefully make it out on a test run and make it back to dock .

maybe it was sand or something...or the key like racerx said....yea racer..your right..best thing to do with a force is R & R lol....hopefully i can sell it before i leave lol...but i'd still like to get some fishing time in it till i do :)

here's some pics i took this morning when it was in water....

beautiful boat ya got there! good luck. one thing though, when you hooked up to hose did you notice if motor was pissing before you fired off? on my force i could hook up hose, turn water on and 20 or 30 seconds later she would piss. before i started motor! i couldnt tell if pump workin or not on the hose.

thanks :)..i love my boat just hate the motor now..nah it wont start peeing till the motor has been started, impeller is brand new....it took atleast 30 secs for this one start peeing.....maybe i was just being paranoid when i had it in water and didnt wait long enough lol...that would suck.

Hey Kajun my stand up jetskis don't start to pee for at least 3 to 4 minutes and it makes me nervous till it starts to pee. My old Johnson 115 use to take what seemed like forever to start to pee but it just took it awhile to fill the motor i guess but it never ran hot and the pump was new too. the only thing i ever found in a motor that was running hot and the pump was changed twice but it just didn't seem to punp water in the water fine on the hose was the tube that takes to water to the power head had a hole in it and when on a hose it would force water to the powerhead but the pump just couldn't pump enough to get by the hole ???

Good deal Kajun! I see your tach isn't working. I have not had a chance yet to get my new tach. Hopefully next week I will get it. I'll let you know when I get the old one out and you can tell me where to ship it if you still want it.
