Shrimpin and Builder FL ... question on your console mods

or anyone else who may have modded their center console.

i was searching old post last night and saw the photos both of you had when you re did your console.

i bought a leaning post/tackle center a while ago and have the console out of my boat now.

the leaning post dwarfs the console .. also there is not much room to mount stuff. i wanted to build up the console so that the throttle and steering is higher ( i am pretty tall) and make a flat panel to mount gauges, electronics etc. to make the whole thing taller.

any tips you have on building this? what is the best way to tie it into the existing console?

did you re use the grab rail and the factory windshield?

thanks in advance..

If it was me I think I would make a new base as high as you need it to be and mount to that, much easier then trying to all the gauges and stuff.

Find a location with the least number of complex curves . . . ideally all flat sides where you can make a clean cut horizontally. Cut the console in half and raise it to the desired height 6" - 12" . Use some kind of solid backing support like MDF (waxed and sealed) or Melamine (waxed with partall) to build up the sides.

i thought of that .. but thought again that it would be easier just to build up the area where the guauges go and where the steering wheel goes.

the other problem is that standing up, you cannot see the gauges real good the way they are mounted .. they are designed to be seen if you are sitting while driving.. i have a leaning post now.

if i raised the area where the wheel is a few inches .. and then raised the whole back of the gauge area .. something like builderfl did with his console.???

cheaper and easier to sell your console a buy or build one you like. Don't ruin your 2008 season biting off more than you can chew. Those projects take lots of time.

yeah it's best to just build another like you like it and use the boat till the new one is finished then sell the old one and install the new one

macojoe .. that is what i am thinking of .. i also think i can accomplish the same thing by just building up the area where the controls are ..

thanks for the link .. good photos there.
