Starboard Dashboard

Hi gang,

I am going to replace my helm dashboard with black Starboard. Also on the port side, I want to cover the current black vinyl surface with black Starboard. What thickness Starboard should I use for the dash and can I get away with 1/4" starboard to overlay the port side vinyl? Would 1/4" Starboard be too thin for the helm dashboard for instrument mounting or would 1/2" be better? I think that 3/4" may be too thick for easy instrument mounting.

Need to look at your gauges and see how much adjustment is available, usually 1/4 to 1 inch.
Also be concerned about the helm, that might come into play. If the looks dictate the helm location being involved that might open a nother can of worms.

I and others have already done that in the past, 1/4 it all youneed! Its perfect stuff for the job!

All the red dots are Starboard.

Dash 1/4 I got from the scrap pile at local mariner for $10

Front bulk heads 3/4 and Floor covers 3/4 I bought a full sheet

Gas tank covers 3/8 that I bought full sheet and then the coustom tackle box made all out of 3/8 except door 3/4

Thanks MJ!! Good to hear that 1/4" will do it. I am also thinking that I will move my batteries from the rear bilges to each side of the engine well, above my oil tank, and below the port and starboard bait pans. I want to get my batteries up out of the bilge incase the bilges flood causing a drown out. I plan to use Starboard to make the battery access doors and shelves for the batteries. Planning to use 1/2" white Starboard for the doors and 3/4" for the battery shelves.

MJ did you put any type of backer under the fuel tank cover and do you have any photos that the one soft spot in mine

Those covers on the floor are not fuel tank covers they are fish boxs!! In 1975 the tanks were on the sides under the gunnles 20 gal a side for 40 gal total.

But 3/4 starboard would work fine I am sure for your tank cover!, Its very strong stuff, I am over 300 pounds and I could jump on that all day and be fine.

But it is pricey!!

This is a new dash that is mad out of Ipe(similar to teak) Vic glued this out of some scrap from a deck he was building. looks great & strong it is 5/8 thick. on thing i did was make cut out of cardboard that were the same as the guages and played around with the arrangement. once you have a new dash it is like having a blank canvas, you can aggange to suit you best.

this is back side, i chose to re-locate the fuse panel to the outside on the cabin roof bulkhead so you could get to it

I Did Mine With Starboard At Least 15 Year Ago And It Looks Like I Did It Yesterday. In Fact I Susbsituted Every Piece Of Teak Except The Cabin Door.

MJ speaks the truth. 1/4" is fine. Even with 1/4" you will have to route the back so some switches will thread on. Some are deep enough, but the ones I chose were not. I just routed about a 1" circle around the switch hole on the back of the dash piece so it wasnt too thick for the switch nuts/boots to thread on.
