Starboard floor hatch question??

I have been contemplating replacing the teak floor hatch covers with starboard. I noticed Reel & MJ have/had the starboard hatch covers and I do like how they look. However my question is, do you have to add some sort of support underneath the cover so it won't bend when being stepped on? I know I pack some pounds and was wondering if the material will hold up when my fat arse steps on it. So I was wondering if some cleats underneath would add support and if so how do you attach them?

Thanks for any help guys.

Use 3/4.
No need for any more support.

Tsubaki,

Thanks for the info and I always appreciate your ("make my life easier") mods. I love your "bilge guard" too, that's a great idea! I plan on doing the floor with the light grey Durabak so im going for the whole new clean look routine. I will make sure to take lots of pictures of my progress and the end results. Hopefully if the weather holds out for this weekend I may be laying down the first coat of paint. Pictures coming soon.

Tsubaki's right about using 3/4"...I'm no lightweight and have had some healthy lads aboard w/no probs...keep in mind Starboard in this size WILL expand, so leave some "wiggle room"...I chose light grey and it gets hot on bare feet in summer's direct sun...white will not. They make it now w/diamond texture and I think I would use it now in this application

The aft lid is split w/the onboard charger attached under the front half, folds up for charging...on the bottom of the hatch in back are two group 31 batteries for the electric trolling motor...the two lid pieces are connected w/a SS continuous hinge. 3/4" finger holes in each end of each lid make lifting hardware unneccessary and work like a champ.

Reel,

I may borrow your hinged hatch idea also. That gives me some good ideas for my middle hatch where the ropes & bumpers are stored. I believe I will go with the plain white like Tsubaki did, only because it's less expensive. The best price on Ebay I could find right now is $86.95 X 2. So I am still searching for cheaper if there is such a thing.

MJ,

Two years ago when I joined here, seeing your V20 all done up really inspired me to one day do the same. It sure did look sweet with all the re-mods you did. Thanks guys for all your great ideas. This is truly my favorite site, even though I don't post alot, I am here reading everyday.

One thing I did that really worked out well was find a 120 qt cooler that fit like a glove in the forward hatch, then cut a piece of Starboard to cover the remaining opening, curving the front edges to wrap the cooler...cooler is my fish-box/storage depending on need...

Another pic of the forward cooler in party mode...

I'm pretty sure I've still got a length of SS hinge that'll work for your split lid...I'll send it to ya if you wanna...

Reel,

Sorry I took so long getting back to you on the hinge. I am all set because I have some old SS piano hinge that I took off of a milk tank cover from the farm. I think I will be going with the light grey as well because it will match the Duraback color. I wanted to paint it this weekend, but here in New England it's been non stop rainy dreary days for almost two weeks now. So I am launching Wed. (rain or shine) for opening day of fluke season in Rhode Island.

MJ,

Thanks for the J. Freeman Plastics info! I am calling them ASAP to order a full sheet of 3/4" light grey. They have it listed at $171.00 a 4' X 8' sheet where as the cheapest I could find on Ebay was $131.00 for two pieces 19" X 32"!!! It's a no brainer, buy a full sheet for $171.00 and do all the hatches and then some. So thanks MJ

Thats great, but the prices like i said are not updated! I am sure its mid to high 200's now?
I will be buying a full sheet soon as I have some things to do on the OX, and I like having the extra for other stuff.

MJ,

I called J. Freeman and talked to Andy. I almost fell off my chair whenever he quoted me $320.00 for a full sheet (4' X 8' x 3/4") of Seaboard grey color. I guess it sure did go up MJ! So my plans are now back to the white starboard from the guy off of Ebay for two pieces 19 x 32 for the floor hatches. I will keep trying to find cheaper then the $131.00 if at all possible.

Yea I knew they went up, but I still like to get the full sheets so I have left over for other things. Made a cutting board doors floor ll kinds of stuff for the V20.
I will be getting some 1/2 inch for some stuff i need to do.
