I did a search of the site to try to figure out the most popular steering cable length for the V20 but I couldn't really get find a good solid answer.

I'm going to be buying a new steering system this week and I need to know what length of cable I need. I will be measuring this evening, but I thought I'd check in with you guys. Does 17ft sound about right? I do have a 4" setback with my fixed pos. jackplate.

Hey Blue...17' SOUNDS right, but measure to be sure...I don't think your jackplate setback will play into it much...doesn't it run straight from the slashwell to the steering arm?...

Suggestion: go w/the No Feedback Steering system...I put it on mine 3 yrs ago and it's GREAT....I can come outta the hole and straight line across the lake and never touch the wheel....short of hydraulic it's the best system out there... ;D

I measured last night and I think I can go with 16'. I bought the 16' cable at lunch - not a NFB they didn't have it in stock.

We'll see this evening if its going to work. If not, they said I could take it back. If I have to take it back, I'll definitely go with NFB.
 
I have an almost new teleflex steering cable if you are interested. My steering cable broke last spring and I replaced it. Two months later I repowered my boat and installed hydraulic steering. My V20 is a 1991. Let me know if you are interested and I will measure it. I'll take $50.00
 
Blue....I know how it goes..."this isn't what I really want, but I got it in my hands and it'll do"...if your new cable won't overcome the engine's torque and you're fightin' the wheel all day for the life of that cable...well, you get my point....if the new cable you got DOES overcome the torque and 16' is right then go ahead...I've learned the HARD WAY to wait on what;ll do the best job... :'(
 
Sundance, thanks for the offer but I'm going to replace the whole system.

Well, the 16' turned out to be 2 feet too short, so I placed a call this morning to order an 18ft NFB system which is going to cost only $30 more and they will likely have it by lunch time Thursday.

I'm sure its all for the best. I should have been a little more patient. With Easter weekend right around the corner, I'm nervous that I won't get this thing ready in time!

I was going to say 18 was the right deal but you have found out already. Mine is like 21 with the gill bracket.
 
Thanks for trying to let me know but some things you just gotta learn the hard way :P

MJ, what's your favorite bait for big flounder? Biggest I've ever caught was only about 3.5 lbs.

We did real good on them at Murrells Inlet SC last year in late July. In 10 hours of fishing over a 3 day period, we landed over 100 fish, with about a 70% keeper ratio.

Not bad, but no real big fish. We used mud minnows.
 
No wonder I can't catch any! :o That is the making of one hell of a fish fry!
 
NFB is awesome. The steering wheel won't take any orders from the outboard, only from your hands. Gone are the days of tying a bungy [sp?] strap to the steering wheen to keep the outboard from moving while trailering! I'm so glad the first cable didn't work out! :D

wow 100 in a day Thats great!! I never do that!! I get about 150 to 200 ;D

My biggest 2 were season before last, a pair one 12# and one 13# caught in the same spot 15 min apart!

Normal I use squid strips and squid skirts. Bucktails work great also for the big ones!!

Here are a few i will be using this year!!
