Tachometer shorting out

Couldn't get the boat to start. Pulled the tach wire off the neg post of the coil and she started right up. So what have I got? I guess a short in the tach or the wiring? Anyone ever have this problem.
She's an i/o.

Just read about MJ.
Keeps things in perspective doesn't it.

Thanks for any help,
Rick

could be the shift switch onthe shift plate, hook the tach wire back up, and look at the roller switch on the shift plate, make sure its not stuck. Try starting it again and if it doesn't start, disconnect the wires to teh shift switch and try again. If that still doesn't do it, disconnect the tach wire at the back of the tach, and try one more time, if it starts now, you truely have a bad tach

I have a I/O and my tach went out so I bought a new one and even hooked it up as the instrcutions asid and my eng would not fire either. I changed two of the 3 wires to a different terminal and it fired right off so it may not be a shorted tach.
