dont get me wrong, hes a good kid. known him from work for a couple years now. hes the kid with the contender sticker on his hard hat, always wearing a contender shirt, always talking about how awesome everything he owns and everything he does is. ya know, the kid whos big wig daddy got him a "soft hands" position at the shipyard that he really isnt qualified for and doesnt really know how to or even have to do. someone who has never had any real bills, never had to go without and probably never had to or even could change his own oil. but he is a real pleasure to talk to. for the most part a well mannered, genuinely likable kid... i guess.
so when i saw him at the launch the other morning it was big smiles and strong handshakes, havent seen each other in a while. but it didnt take long... his boat this and his boat that. had to show me pictures on his phone of all the trout hes been catching at the fork in johns bayou. told him the sun gonna be coming up soon so good luck and yall be safe. dunked my junk in right next to his and while i was getting things sorted, as was he and his little friend, he had to ask..."how old is that boat?" and "that would be a pretty cool boat with with a paint job and a 4stroke" and i know he meant well when he told me that if i had any trouble out there that i could call him on the vhf and he would tow me or help any way he could. yea
so when his buddy asked me where i was heading i told them, "i was gonna run into smugglers cove but i hear they might be biting at the fork in johns bayou, so i might try that."
"nah ah, we got that spot covered"
they snickered noticeably when i replied, "not if i get there first" and grinded my junk into reverse and pulled away from the dock. his boat, a newer 21' contender center console with a 200 yammie 4stroke ttop 2 big flush mounted lowrances etc... an extremely nice boat even if it is his daddy's, was right in front of mine... 88 dually with bennet trim tabs and a 99 2stroke mercury offshore 225 that, well...it performs very well, as we got to the exit of the harbor
i know he hammered that thing as hard as he could cause she let out a growl and the bow shot up as that pretty little boat came up on plane. my dually wont do that. with two batteries in the forward stow, the other 2 under the port console, the forward fish box/cooler loaded with ice and beer and the trim tabs down... my old junk hardly lifts the bow a foot or so if i hammer on it. so by the time his bow settled down and the 4stroke started to dig, i was already coming around him well on my way to gone!
so bout the time i get tabs and trim tweaked and settle in behind my whindshield. light my "cigarette" and start taking in the beauty of gods creation as the sun starts to break the horizon i hear this little redneck bastard on the vhf, "where you think youre going, son?" look back and here he comes, running a strong 42-43mph. bout what i figure that boat, that motor and that ttop can do. when he slowly came around me there was enough dusk to see the **** eating grin on his face as he pulled that gay yellow visor hat thingy off his head and used it to wave at me as he went by.
now, im a 43 year old, grown *** man. and i almost never care about stuff like that. but this particular morning on the gulf of mexico, the good lord had blessed us with no whind and glassy like conditions. advantage mine! he was about a boat and a half in front of me when i decided to hellwith the fuel burn, let her eat! now yall, i didnt wave or talk shiit, i didnt even look when i passed that fancy little contender. although i really did wanna see the look on his face when he found out that, on a calm sea, my boat is a good 15mph faster than his.
i dont know how long exactly it took him to cover the 8 miles to cat island and into johns bayou, or if he slowed down. maybe he dropped his gay yellow visor? but when they pulled that contender up to the fork in johns bayou, he must have seen a beautiful sight with the rising sun behind my old v20. with the trolling motor down and my rod bent over for a nice little speckled trout!
they didnt say a word or even pull all the way into the fork. they just turned around and idled back down the bayou. maybe hoping that i didnt notice them? and im not ashamed that i grabbed the mic and hollered at them, "ey man, you know where i can find a good deal on some boat paint?"
