V-20 Weather

If by "the distance" you mean Chicken Canyon for BFT - Don't think I can go long until Sunday but there are 30% T storms forecast. Might get in on Mako Mania on another (bigger) boat.

Maybe get out to Mud Hole for cod & sharks Friday afternoon depending on weather or "whether" my wife doesn't have plans for me.:rule:

Looking back at photos, I got a bft on June22, 2011 at the Princess, so its about to start.

Got a 25" keeper cod and two 20" throwbacks, a fat 16" winter flounder on a jig, and a throwback out of season 18" tog

Buddy on another boat got a 30 pound cod

Fantastic! It appears to be maybe 15 pounds?
Made it out Friday, very sporty in the morning, needed the curtains which of course were not on the boat, but went the distance and got the reward...will post by hopefully tonight.

Saturday

What happen to the forecast on Saturday? (Jersey coast)

I wanted to go out early Saturday morning only to find stiff NE winds...

At least I was able to get out the inlet and test the V in some nasty slop. Handled great. Took one wave up the window but it didn't make it over.

I'm glad that I didn't get caught offshore in that slop.

Guess I'll just keep this thread going.

6/29 Sunday -Ran out to the Chicken Canyon & Princess. No tuna no mahi. Got mauled by 10 lb bluefish...Doubles & triples... if there were hooks in the daisy chains I would have had a sextuple! There are teeth marks in the bird.

Gonna give it 2 weeks and hope for V20 weather again:pray2:

Got me some shark bait though....:sly:

Fluke

Ran to the Axel Carlson (late morning) end up with 5 keeper fluke, largest was 25"

Hard to hold bottom drifting and needed ten ounces.

Came in around 4:00. Inlet started getting a little nasty with the outgoing tide but the V went right through it.

I remember oh maybe about 12years ago the Blue fish were just about out to the canyon. Good catch Dan I think we may have another V-20 going the distance soon!!!
Hey Chuck sound's like your out riggers got put to a little test.Hope they didn't destroyed any tuna lures.

Going the distance

I'm gaining confidence in my V with every trip. I fished with my father today and we both can't believe how well the V handles the chop. I have trim tabs and almost always use them (except in following seas)

I have the range and eprib. I would not mind getting a light weight, three person raft and PLB. All I would have to do is wait for the Bermuda high!

I would like to get out to the Shark River Reef or the mud hole but I don't know of any spots or what time of year to fish each area.

South Jersey (mostly Cape May) is most of my experience. Deeper water with more structure up here...

Weather

I am looking to go on Friday, maybe afternoon as that looks a little better.

Saturday looks great - run offshore and catch them up!

talked to the guys at Hoffmann's gas dock. They haven't seen one Bluefin.

So we'll probably do some sharking at Humpty Dumpty. Plan to clear inlet at 5 am. I'll be on 68 if anyone is out.

So it was beautiful but we didn't got to the Chicken Canyon, we stopped 20 miles out at Humpty and trolled around looking for the Stolt wreck. It wasn't at the numbers I had and it is not where the NOAA chart marks it. We picked up a 3 pound Bonito on the troll. We never found the wreck but we did find a giant floating tree full of barnacles. Got up close we saw at least three dolphin and about 100 other fish, triggers, jacks, chubs, and mackeral. I grabbed a freshwater rod with a jig on it and bang, immediately had a 3 pound dolphin. After that we couldn't get a dolphin thru all the other fish. We caught some bait for chunking up in the shark slick. Caught a beautiful 14" mackeral bait

We left the tree and set up a drift on the ledge. The mackeral bait got hit quick, it was a big pull but did not get hookset. Came back with just a head. Then the bonito got hit and same thing, never stuck it. about an hour later a small brown shark came in and we got it on a small bait with a circle hook and a mono leader. Surprisingly he never bit off. He was about 50 pounds. We cut the leader and saved the swivel.

We got back to my dock the guy in the slip next to me was tying up. Big grinns asking us if we got one. He went to the Chicken and had a 90 pound Bluefin on deck.

But I did get a Mahi Sammich out of it, and that ain't bad

Don't sound too bad at all, stuck to your game plan and still caught a shark and a Mahi Mahi . Fishing out of a 20 footer offshore and catching fish is going the distance! Maybe the next V-20 day I hope to join you for the BFT.
