1988 V20 with 225 Honda

Well I did not see what year your boat is??

But you say its 2820# ??

Dry weight from factory on a 1985 CC, is 1920# you are 900# over weight!!

According to Loadrite trailers, there single axle bunk trailer is 675 to 700# depending on which one you get.

trailer 700 + motor 610= 1310 + boat 1920 = 3230 + gas 360 = 3590 + mis 200 = 3790 + T top 130 = 3920 total weight

4820 - 3920 = 900# over what you should be??

Better check for a hold of dead mackrel!! :o
 
Jackman, it does sound like you may have some extra weight there, but add T-Top, anchors, batteries and other rmisc. items can add up...


as for as your top-end, I'm conviced repropping will get more speed and allow your Honda to spin up to it's max RPM...did you ever get in touch w/ these guys??...they make props FOR honda and are very knowledgable about matchin' props to various rigs...they made mine and it's gettin' all there is from my motor...very happy w/ it ;) ;D

I call the prop place you suggested. Talked to Jeff. He told me I should go to a 15 or 14 pitch prop (same 14 1/4 diameter). He said that would get the RPMs up there, and put less of a strain on the motor. He said to stay with the 4 blade. Only problem is his props were $523 !!
Checked around the net and the closest prop I could come up with was a 14 3/4 X 15 - aluminum 4 blade prop for ~ $ 130.
Not sure what to do. I do think the boat is too heavy (for some unknown reason) - if it were 900 lbs lighter, I'm sure the 17 pitch prop would be ok.

Simple math should tell you that you should not have to drop to a 15" pitch prop to solve your problem. If anything you should need a 21" or 23" pitch to avoid over reving. With a 15" pitch and a 5500rpm red line your max speed will be some where in the mid/low 30"s.
 
I suggest that you should test the boat out on a calm day with a light fuel load and just you onboard. This should give you an indication if your problem is weight sensitive. The first test you listed you were carrying 900lbs+ 360lb in passengers and 360+lb in fuel, on the second 600lbs+ plus & fuel. Running alone with a light fuel load you could be as much as 1000 lbs lighter! If this does not make a big differance in the speed/rpm than your problem is probably not a weight related one.

The red line on my motor is 6200 rpm. WOT only gets me to 5300. The prop people tell me that I am bogging down the engine going at WOT and only getting 5300 rpm.
After checking the web to see what props are available for my motor, I see very few props that have a pitch less than 17. Most are 17 to 21!
Still think there is something wrong with the boat.
 
Going to Denver for a week to visit my son and his family. Be back on the 8th. Will do some more testing on the V20 them.

this may have been asked allready, but has the tach accuraccy been checked? I've taken brand news out of the box and they been off quite a bit, you'll need to hook up a shop tach and run the boat at WOT to check this
 
I dont know any thing about 4 stroke performance or which one is the fastest but I got a friend who has an old very heavy 19 Mako with a high dollar 130 Honda on it and its VERY heavy and slow.He has a T Top etc and has had to add bennet trim tabs and plug his scuppers as its so ass heavy. With two guys its hard to get up to plane and does not want to hold very well as he is always on the throttle trying to keep it at 3800 or so .At full throttle it is a gas hog but very quiet running.He used to have a nimble little 140 johnson which ran out around 42 but I would doubt if he gets 31 or 32 out of the Honda..I dont think the older boats were designed for such heavy weights and it effects their speed and performance but I could be wrong...I dont think its a horsepower thing...Frank
 
Finally got out on a fresh water lake. I have not been filling up the gas tank, so I can see what she does with a lighter load. The tank is about 5/8 ths full. I had my dog Sasha (40 lbs.) and one friend (160) and me (215). We took off, and the boat was very sluggish - that was when I realized I forgot to put the plug in, and the boat was filling with water. Had to open her up all the way, and have my friend get up in the front of the boat. Turned the bilge on. After 5 minutes (or so) she finally plained out. We ran around for a while until the bilge stopped pumping out water. We got the plug in. After that, it was fun. Truning 5400 rpm and doing 45 mph. Tried to catch some crappies, but didn't have the right equipment on board. Wanted to go out to the gulf this weekend, but too rough.
Will report more when I get out again.

Jackman, my Honda 150 spins up to 6000 on the tach and tops out at 42 mph on GPS...don't know if it's propped wrong or what, but you still got some numbers you're not gettin' yet :) ...


...and my bet is , ya won't soon be forgettin' the plug again ;) ...
 
Well, I did it! Just got fed up with the whole deal. Bought another 1988 V20 with a 200 hp Mariner on it. The boat is in awesome condition - original decals, nice gel coat, no paint. I am taking the stuff off the Bone Crusher and putting it all on the new boat (Ttop, windlass, electronics etc). Just ordered a 2007 Evinrude E-TEC 200 hp motor for it. That engine weighs almost 200 lbs less than the Honda (427 vs 610). I'm psyched - will let you know how it goes. Also ordered 2 Optima 34 batteries for it. Going to install them in the center console.
Having the motor installed January 15th.
