little tunny & bluefish at Mud Hole

Well it definitely was V weather on Friday. Wish I could have fished the whole day. had to head back at 1030.

Got a handful of little tunny (aka Albie/False albacore/Bonita) and a couple big bluefish. We were daisy chains & spreader bars trolling fast & tight to the boat to avoid bluefish. The blues hit when we slowed the boat to reel in tunny. I'm sure if you trolled slow & deep you'd have nonstop blues. The head boats were jigging the crap out of them.

v1I went the distance to the glory hole and a little beyond, left the inlet at 3:00am and had the lines in at day break. Radar worked fine but the glare of the front running lite was bad. No moon at all. the fishing was non stop the false albacore were everywhere but we managed to get one bft and a very nice mahi. I could only hope for a fall bite of bft in the mud hole.

hey step up,
Glad to hear you got a bft and mahi.
no reason for violins. You got some grilled mahi sammiches
and you can only keep one bft anyways!

If I had all day I would have been there too. Great weather. Ran out at 30mph and back at 35mph

I moved my running lights up to my hardtop this year. Greatly improved night running. I have no radar, just Mk1 eyeballs.(btw, radar doesn't see pot markers!)
I usually try to time it so I clear the inlet at the first hint of light so I can see for most of the run out. With a little light, you can run at 30+mph. Makes the Glory Hole a 2 hr run, give or take, and you end up with lines wet just after sunrise.

I'm encouraged by your catch and the fact that some guys have caught small yft in the mudhole ( some head boats have got a few while night bluefishing and I know a guy who knows a guy who trolled a few near Humpty Dumpty). Certainly worth giving it a shot when the weather permits.

Fingers crossed that the big bft show up this fall.

Impressed that you guys are running the V's out a ways........

Bonito are decent eating - I got a few off the Highlands last year.
