Mahi, No tuna

Went fishing with my brother.
The forecast was borderline for the V20 to make a 60 mile run to the tuna grounds, so I borrowed a friends 23cc Sea Hunt. (Great ride, if I could find a cuddy with a hard top I would trade up). Good thing because the V20 would have been a slow ride and a shorter day.

We found life at the Glory Hole which turned out to be skipjack. The word was that Texas Tower/Bacardi were red hot for Bluefin so we kept going east. Saw a lot of bait on way to Tower. Got to the Tower and no life, went north to Bacardi, guys moaning on the radio...We were debating running back to the bait when a rod went of... got a 7 lb dolphin. That got us thinking mahi(we love catching dolphin) so we figured we were 15 miles from the tip of the Hudson canyon and it is always loaded with pot markers. We calculated we had plenty of gas, weather was good but we would probably pay for it later with a sloppy ride back.

Paid off with some really nice fish on the troll and a 13 pounder on bait. There were at least three more nice fish on that pot that would not take a bait.

Fantastic, congrats !!!!

I was off 16 miles Saturday, and thought about riding out to that spot but coin flip type decision and didn't. I had full tank 70 gallons, flat calm seas.......

Let's see.........3,400rpm / 25 mph / 8 gal per hr = 8.75 running time x 25 mph = 218 mile range.

Reduce that by 10% for safety sake is 195 miles.......so safely 1/3rd rule allows up to 60 miles out, 60 back, 60 reserve !!!!!

Only because it was FLAT calm...........as in FLAT
