I own a 1985 Wellcraft V-20 with a Mercruiser 470. I just purchased it and am going through the systems to get it running and I found that the mechanical fuel pump was not working at all. I pulled it apart and inspected it, but its just worn. The diaphragm is worn and severely creased and isn't creating any suction. So after a few searches I found the replacement pump based on the application (1985 Mercruiser 470) and came up with a Carter M60032. I worked for my father's Mom&Pop auto parts store for about 10 years growing up and through college and its come in handy in this instance. When the pump came in, the pump did not look the same as what is on the boat and the input and output ports were not in the same alignment (however, that's not really that big of a deal since only one of the lines is a steel line, the rest are flexible rubber). In fact, all of the photos and catalogs online show the image of what looks like the M60032 pump, with a larger filter bowl and a stamped steel arm. What I pulled off the boat has a much smaller filter bowl and the arm is milled and polished steel. Upon looking at the application guide for Mercruiser 170 I noticed the part number of Carter M60337, which looks just like what I pulled off the boat. The stamped casing numbers are long gone and all I can read is Carter M*****. The numbers are worn off. Also, all of the diagrams I can find from Mercruiser have the pump mounted with the filter bowl facing upwards. Mine is mounted with the filter bowl facing down, which also makes me wonder if the right pump is on there now.
I also looked at the technical specs of those two pumps and they're the same. 25GPH @1800 rpm and 5-6.5 PSI max. The only difference I can see is that the inlet and outlet sizes are different. 1/4" for both on the M60337 and 3/8" inlet and 1/2" outlet for the M60032. The vent/overflow on the top is larger on the M60032 also, but its a threaded barb fitting that could easily be replaced with an appropriate variant. First, I'm wondering if anyone has any fuel pump experience like this and I'm also wondering what pump SHOULD be on that engine. I don't know if the pump I pulled off is the original or not. Previous owner didn't know either. Its an easy operation to return the M60032 and order a M60337 that matches what came off the engine, but I know from years of restoring cars and working on motorcycles that just because it was on there when you got it, doesn't mean it was the right one. I'd just like to get this thing running soon and I can't do that until I have a fuel pump installed. Thanks!
