New Throne for the Captain advise

willy

God
Been waiting for the right one to come along, found it this week, it out of a 31 foot Contender. Will be a real good change from my two too low helm chairs.
Need advise on a couple of things.
-These were installed on the Contender with just screws into the cockpit floor. Is that the norm?

-when i remove my pedestal seats there is going to be six hole I think each, best way to fill and finish so I don't look like a podunk on the water?

-doing bolts where the seats were and where this is going to go, no real access, should I use one of those marine expansion screw set ups. Do they hold up well?

- you see the foot rest on the front, well there are the same exact mounting brackets on the back, any idea what those are for? they are too high for a cooler holder and it came with a strap set up for that.

-cup holders are missing for the holes you see, is that something you can normally buy somewhere?

- I know, I am a pain in the arse!

hey Willy why not try calling the phone number on the decal i would think they would tell you how to mount it and then some. looks awesome hope it works for you.

Mine was mounted down with #14 stainless screws and alot of 5200 and she never budged even in some NASTY water. As for the old bolt holes, I would use some git rot to initially fill the holes if it is a wood core so as to encapsulate it so water can't get into the core. Then use a gel coat patch kit and color match it to make them not so much of an eyesore and cover em over. If you can get to the underside though, I would through bolt it with 1/4 stainless. If not just the 5200 and #14 stainless screws. As for teh rear mounts, it could have been for some outriggers maybe?

When you call that number, they can also tell you what the rear mounts are for...

If you just screw it to the floor deck, you"ll eventually regret it...the #14 Spare recommends are the only way to go for a bolt-down that's gonna get that much abuse...being tall like that, the LEVERAGE factor w/the weight at the top, in seas will be BIG...peeps LEANING against it in rough water, etc...not to mention vibration...#14s I'm pretty sure are same as 1/4"...and the toggles Phat Daddy shows above are the are the way to go. unless there is access under the deck and you can use nylocks and fender-washers...

W/either fastener, you'll wanna bed 'em down w/4200 or 5200...but let me show you something...
DSCN1070.jpg

This as a "butterfly" toggler that was inserted thru so much silicone that it stuck to the side of the screw and was rendered useless...it never opened under the deck...
W/the ones PD shows, I don't think this can happen, but still, I would put all fasteners in place (dry fit) and then apply the bedding...4 small wedges under the feet will lift it while you squirt the juice to to it...
BUT BEFORE you do all that, coat the insides of all the new holes you've just drilled thru the core w/some epoxy resin or equal so seal 'em up good, lest floor rot invades FishBones!!...

Wish I could scoot back up there and give you a hand w/that install, but kinda got my hands full at the moment...and I wouldn't be surprised if the seats that come out don't find their way to a venerable V-20 somewhere...LOL!!

Show us some pics of your new throne installation in the Floating Pleasure Palace, there King-O!!...

willy, i used something like this for some spring line cleats on the v. i was a little leary of them , but they work well and are pretty easy to use.

even better would be to put in an inspection plate and use fender washers and nylock nuts. i hate a floppy seat...

I also used these to remount my pedestal seat and they worked great. 1/4" stainless machine screws.
On my 84 cuddy, only 4 holes bolted thru the other 2 were screwed into the stringers.

I'm thinking maybe there was a fold-up cutting board on the back of that chair?

Since it was probably custom made for the Contender and not a generic size, i would think that the brackets lined up with the edge of the console, both of which, would be screwed directly into the stringers.

As for the rear brackets they could be to mount another foot rest pipe on, for more rod holders. ALso on Contenders website this is an option for seating for the 30 Tournament, "Tournament leaning post (Features tray, cooler base, (4) rod holders and folding footrest)" This is right off Condender's website.

The holes in the floor? :head: I will let someone else chime in on that one.

As far as the toggle bolts i have not used them on my boats. But i have used them for mounting shelving, tv brackets, etc in restaurants, bars etc,. IMO they are as strong as an equivalent size bolt and nut with a fender washer. We always put 1/2 or 3/4 plywood on the studs before sheetrock to anchor stuff to. Its strong. One builing owner didn't like the idea. I told him if he could rip the shelving down i will replace it with his choice of fasteners on MY time and dime. After a couple tries he gave up. :sun:

Willy, I looked down into the pedistal that's original on this '84...I haven't confirmed it yet, but it appears to be a 3-4" hole thru the floor deck under the center of the pedistal...hope this not the case on yours...:head:

Problem is it will cross the seam for thee tank cover onto the rest of the the floor. I hope not, going to go down and take a look soon, maybe tomorrow, tried to call that number, you get a cell phone voice mail. Try again Monday

i've also mounted them through a piece of starboard with a crapload of 5200 to cover old seat holes, if nothing else be a temporary fix till you can do an involved repair. or would be good for years if sealed up good, then could notch it around tank cover. it actually looks pretty good if you round and smooth out the edges

My 84 had those holes under the pedestals

Hey Willy, nice find on that seat/leaning post. That ought to look good in your boat. My 77's got a 2 1/2 in. hole under the starboard pedastal but had back to back with no hole on the port side. I removed the back to back and mounted a pedastal seat on the port side using predrilled holes, plenty of 5200 and #14 stainless steel screws. Its held good so far. Ive got two new Todd extra wide captains chairs ordered, can't wait till I get them in.

I don't think they would install the pedestals that require a hole in the deck between the tank cover and the floor. I have been wrong before, they need a stern talkin to if they did. I have not seen those attachments for the footrest used like that. Only welded on with the round side/pivot out. Nice find. I was thinking you looked comfy sitting in them captains chairs at the Barnegat Bay Raftup. You will miss them when rafted-up but you will love the storage and leaning for fishing, wave riding and the extra space for a cooler underneath. Just make sure you mount it close enough to make leaning comfy while at the wheel.

Those rear brackets I'm guessing may be for a grab handle for someone sitting on a cooler next to the transom. The CC I fished on over the weekend had one and that is how I used it on the ride in.

Sweet leaning post. Gonna look good!
