New (to me) toy

I ran across this for a couple hundreds bucks and couldnt pass it up. Its an 87' Kawasaki KX 250. Ive been wanting a dirt bike to ride with my daughter at an offroad park near my hunting camp. She has a XR80 that just sits up because we all know riding alone is no fun.

Anyways, I been tinkering with it the last couple days and got it running yesterday. Its been bored over and jetted and DAYUM its scary fast.

I started riding when I was about 6 and Ive owned and ridden my share of sport bikes so speed is no stranger to me but this 2 stroke is a different animal all together. The powerband is going to take some getting use to. It will pull the front tire off the ground with my 210lbs on in fourth gear no problem.

Anyways, thought Id shared with yall. Now that I got it running and I know its worth fooling with Ill be tearing it apart, going through everything, the shocks, painting, bearings, etc...

Just remember, stuff does not heal like it used to.

Tell me about it, Im only 35 and feel like I been in a bar fight from kicking on the damn thing the last couple days. Finally had to hook it to my truck and get towed to fire it up the first time since it hasnt been ran in years. Kicks over second time now.

Be CAREFUL... I rode 250 mx'ers for years and LOVE em but with a bike that will do 70 mph RIGHT NOW when it goes wrong it happens FAST! Most recently I had an 87 zuki rm 250 w an la sleeve 295 big bore kit, fmp pipe n silencer boysean dual stage reeds bigger carb and some nasty port work... would wheelie rolling in top gear at 70 mph like it was nothing..... Also had a 91 rmx 250 all stock... same as an rm except wider gear spacing and a headlight.... Wish I still had that one.... Sold em when I was your age after busting several ribs and removing the skin from my right arm, chest, both knees, side of my right hand, right hip, and a$$ cheeks... seems like there were a couple broken fingers in that one too..... Took a WHILE to heal up that time. That certainly wasn't my first crash but at 35 I didn't bounce like I did at 20.

I also had a 4 wheeler that actually broke my buddy's foot by kicking back when he tried to start it in tennis shoes... was a nasty zuki lt-500r

DAMN look what you went and did.... got me thinkin and now I gotta go check craigslist....

Well, I had a Kaw KH400 2 stroke 3 cylinder (Only bike I ever had that came stock with a spare set of plugs in a little case under the seat) Used to foul them all the time. That was a speedstar, but the one the really scared me was my Yammy RD350 Crotch rocket. Another 2 stroker and like yours, it would lift the front wheel in all gears. And yes, when it goes bad, it goes bad in a hurry. Be careful

RD350? I had a friend that had a RD400 Daytona Special, probably the most fun I've ever had on two wheels. Every time i think about getting something with two wheels, I remind myself why I'm building a rock buggy, theres something nice about having a full cage of 1.75 DOM tubing around you, and still have enough power to act a fool without killing yourself

Stink, what ORV park is near you?

Looked a lot like this. My tank was more of an orange color, but otherwise this is pretty much what I had. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMmjA6tWUwY

Yesterdays lesson, when your scottish neighbor pulls up on his four wheeler drinking a beer and says " hey have you been down the power line, its not muddy at all" he is lying.

I sunk it to the frame and had to lift it out a couple times. Also fell on my azz in the mud trying to get it out and lost my boots and had to dig them up too. Im sore this morning, Im too old for that crap. :head:

You just weren't on the throttle enough going in.

You are partially correct, some holes I would just twist it and bail off to get it through and end up on my back in the mud. At least then I didnt have to dig me AND it out.

Theres a very FINE line on that thing between enough throttle to look like a genius and "oh ****, Im hurt". Im trying to err on the side of caution. I know Im "only" 35 but things hurt more now than they once did. :zip:

Im going to get some riding videos as soon as I rig up a helmet mount for my camera. This thing is NASTY the audio Ive tried to get of the engine really doesnt do it justice. Everyone Im sure is familiar with the old Black Max Mercs and how badazz they sound at idle out of the water, well this thing makes that sound like a fart from Charlies wore out sphincter.

Fixed it..... 250cc mx bikes only use the front wheel for landing gear.... Lol

My dad rides a 1500 goldwing and rode the KX yesterday for about 1minute. Scared the chit out of him and he got off. He couldnt hardly get on it and said "its too high". I said they aint for sitting on, they are for GOING. LOL

He road my 750 Katana once too, scared him. He think his 6 cylinder GW is "fast" but now has a better understanding of power to weight ratio. :haha:
