NEW V20 owner

First let me say thanks to Macajoe for getting my account squared away.
Well it all started when I saw a craigslist post for a V20 for sale about 5 months ago. I fell in love with the boats immediately. I have a ski boat but have been looking for something more fish friendly. I found this website and have been checking it out weekly ever since.....just dreaming.
A guy in my neighborhood has a V20 in his backyard and I stopped a couple weeks ago when he was outside to see if he would let me climb up in his V and check it out.....amazingly enough he told me he was trying to give it away!!! I told him I absolutely loved those hulls and he said "do you mind If I ask why like them so much???"...what a boob. I hauled it off the next day (finally I'm the lucky guy that stumbles on something like that).
It's an 89' outboard model with a rough dual axle trailer. The transom is solid and the floor has one soft spot about 3" in diameter just aft of the fuel tank cover. Other than that she really just needed to be cleaned up.
It will be a while before she sees the water as I am on a limited budget (wife announced she's pregnant 3 days before the V came into my life).
I've got the rod boxes out and the fuel tank cover and fish box cover doing some minor repairs to them.
I live in Kingsland, Ga. and plan on using the boat in the intra-coastal and offshore waters of the Georgia and Florida coasts.
Anywho...enough rambling let me get to my initial questions for the experts...there will be many more to follow I'm sure.

- what is the capacity of the fuel tank? They are large plastic tanks under the deck.
- the deck drains that are on the port and stbd. side aft of the deck that drain out the sides (mine are trashed)....should there be any kind of flapper/check valve in there to keep water from coming or is it simply that the deck is about the water line and "in theory" water won't come in??????

One more thing..I saw a posted picture of one of the members wearing a V-20 T-shirt. Where can I get one of those?
I took some pics and will post them soon.

Enjoy your weekend guys,
Shane

welcome to the site and being a new V owner, I can't answer for the gas tanks, both of mine are different only because one is metal and the othere is poly, but they both hold 60 gals.

I think some of the pre 90 models had dual tanks but you can search on the site and you should be able to find that info. I remember others talking about the same set-up as what you have.

Welcome to the site

Post pictures of everything, see if there are labels on the tanks that may be some reference, most have the capacity on them.

con grads to you FREE wow what a find as for the tank i have 1 55 gallon belly tank and the scuppers theres no flap to keep the water out but what i do is close them up with a plug and when water gets in i take the plugs out but while im drifting i put the plugs in, we need pics in curoius

Welcome to the site!!

You are well on your way to V20 land!! It is highly likely you have a 60 gallon fuel tank unless someone has switched it out.

Congrats on your new addition(s) ....one in the oven and a V20 - best of both worlds!!

Thanks for all the input

I appreciate the input and the welcome aboard's. I'm slowly getting this thing ready. It currently has no seats which is a good thing for me cause its like a clean slate. I found some used seats and posted another thread in regards to seat size that I will need. Check it out and give me your input if you get a chance.

got PICS!

Alright guys I finally got these pics off my cam and on my computer.
Since these pics I've cleaned her up a bunch and put a cover on. Its raining here for atleast and hour a day and when its not raining its a sauna outside so progress is slow.
I have inspected the transom and determined I have to replace it. I'm not too upset about it because after all the boat was free. Atleast I'll know the transom is in tip-top shape. I plan on using NidaBond and using the method outlined in a thread by MauryC.
I've removed the rod boxes for patching and painting and the wooden rod holders have been sanded and refinished. I had a line on a pair of helm chairs but now all my money is going into the transom. Let me know what yall think and any advice on the transom job is appreciated. I have two major concerns about it right now.
- should I be worried about the stringers being rotten also? I have reached up under the floor and banged on them and they "feel" strong.
- If I encounter any good wood in the transom how my more difficult will that make it to peel the wood away from the fiberglass?
Yall have a great weekend.

GREAT!!
Also consider while you're spending money weather to go bracket, jackplate, etc.
You can sink a pile into it and/or spend a little along.
As I was greeted a little over a year and a half ago by Pipe Dream,
Welcome to the madness!!

Hey tsubaki.....drain sleeves?

I've seen some of your pics where you have put in a drain plug sleeve. On the drain sleeves , the ones that are not for the plug:
Do I put those in prior to pouring or do you drill and put them in later?
And when they are in how do I mushroom over the other end to make em stay?

Thanks

Welcome

Congratulations and welcome to the site, if it wasn’t for the knowledge and wisdom of the pros on this site I would I given up on my V’s a long time ago.
I have also learned pictures are definitely worth a thousand words; after all I spent a thousand dollars trying to fix an engine with the wrong lower unit, I post a couple of pictures and bam the boys nailed it! See my post under repairs for details.
I am currently working on a project hull see my tread it looks like yours!

It's probably best to put them in when your done pouring.
Rolling the sleeve can be easy and hard, depending on the methods used.
Cut the sleeve off with a sharp pipe cutter or if you're real good a hacksaw, about 1/8" -3/16" longer than the edge of the transom. File and deburr the cut end. Coat the sleeve and hole with silicone or 5200, install the sleeve from the inside, wedge it in place, use a small ball pein hammer to roll the outer edge, lightly tapping at the transom edge. This will seem to take forever.
You may also do it with a medium ball pein by holding the round end against the sleeve and tapping it moderately hard with another hammer, circling and rounding as you go.
In either instance be careful not to kink the sleeve from hitting too hard or split the edge you are working with.
Easiest way, is with a tool made just for the job.
Hammer had one and said they were readily available. I'll see if I can locate the thread and/or a supplier.
If you haven't rolled a sleeve before, I strongly suggest buying the tool!

Flange tool

Thanks tsubaki. I'm gonna look around at Lowes. I followed that link and for $40 I think I may just bang on it with my ball peen hammer...lol.
NY Mack- I've been checking out your posts already...been following them for a while. Thats V's gonna be pretty when you finish it. I'm worried about running into good wood in my transom too, like you have. I personally have decided to go with Nida core for mine. Mostly due to price and the guys gonna be in my area so I can pick it up from him. They have also been the most helpful. I didn't even call Seacast, not with their prices.

About the jack plate

On the subject of the jackplate. I found one a while back here in town that was used and was a manual crank. They wanted $200 for it. I would like to set it up with a jack plate if I can find one for a price like that when I'm ready for it. The steering cable has to be bent in order to work with the set back right? Can you bend 'em yourself or do you have to buy them like that?
I think when I switch my motor over from my bowrider I may have to buy a new steering cable anyway. I think it may be two short for the V20.

As far as I know there is no appreciable difference toward the steering cable when useing a jack plate. No bending, different or anything. As a matter a fact, the motor will be up a couple inches higher due to the setback and be easier for the steering cable to operate.
The only issue "may" be the length depending on the amount of setback on the perticular model you get.
The models that have 5 1/2" setbacks will not require a different cable than the one you already have unless it is already really tight.
My cable is 18', a 17' would have been perfect.

cable found

I was out taking a look at my transom and realized there is still a steering cable in the boat. It was last rigged with a Yamaha and I have a Merc. I think those cables are universal arent they? Thats good news if so, I won't have to buy another cable.

Shane, find my old post on here............

I went with the Arjay product (exactly the same as Nidacore). If you take your time you'll be very happy with the results. I've got a solid transom and my boat still looks factory with no cuts or patches in the glass. I can offer you feedback on what I did to get all the old wood out.

Maury
