Not sure about the technical name, but.....

the ubolt on the front of the hull for trailering. i was looking around the cabin on my recently bought v20 and found that inside the hull where the ubolt attaches there is a steel plate. Well mine is almost completey rusted away, I am afraid that a couple more times pulling her out of the water and she might break and pull through the front of the hull. What a mess that would make!!! :-[ I think the front cleat on top of the hull where the anchor is tied off is leaking and water ran down the bolt over the years and rusted the plate away.

so my question is has anyone ever replaced this piece and if so where the hell can i buy a new one or find a used one in good shape ???

thanks fellas

sorry just a newbie in need of some advice ;D

thanks willy, from what i can tell my bow eye is fine, the problem is the plate on the inside that holds it. That is the part i need to replace. If i pull the nuts off the back of the eye then pull out the rusty piece of sheet metal i shouldn't have to replace or remove the eye at all. Right????

thanks

I don't know the answer to that because from what i saw on my boat the eye is a u shaped piece of metal rod, probably stainless thats threaded on the two ends and goes thru hull then thru a metal plate/ sort of like a big flat washer and then the nuts tighten down on that plate. I believe that is what you have also. I need to replace that plate and the nuts and probably the eye (u) too even though that looks good from outside

the plate that is like a big washer. does yours go up on one side and have a bolt that the achor cleat is attached to ???

if so can i buy parts from wellcraft to replace this factory piece or do i have to go through someone like boaters world

cyensen, is there enough lenghth of the two eye-bolt ends to remove the nuts and put some other reinforcement under them...if there is, I don't think you'll lose any strength... ;)...that would be my first shot at it...

thought about that, but when i went to loosen the first nut from bow eye it broke off, so i went ahead and took the rest off and am in the process of buying 1/4" steel and making a new piece this weekend. after i took off the steel piece i noticed the fiberglass has cracked along one side right where it flattens out is this going to be a problem ???

should i put some epoxy or something like liquid nails in the gap to strengthen it up?? i know liquid nails is probably not good to use. Any suggestions? ???

How important the crack is depends on whether it's ''structural'' or not...do you see the crack from inside or out (or both?)...you'll need some kind of epoxy for the repair, but Skools Out is ''Da Man'' to tell ya zackly what to use...if he doesn't look in on this thread, do a new, ''Hey Skools'' thread... ;)...

Oh, and the new steel you're getting ...MAKE SURE it's STAINLESS STEELE or you'll be wasting all your time and effort :)...

If i pull the nuts off the back of the eye then pull out the rusty piece of sheet metal

:oOOOOOUUUUUCH!!! :o

Cy, you are SERIOUSLY making my NORTONS ache! :o;D Watch your language!! We are real sensitive about our NORTONS on this board!!8)

if it's cracked you'll need to cut the crack and then bevel it and glass the crack especially there that's a major stress point. is the crack outside or inside or all the way through? can you post a picture of the crack?

sorry blue about the bad use of words. won't happen again :-X

hey skools here is a photo before i tore it apart. you can see the crack on the left bottom and it continues up to the top of where the sheet metal piece stops. the crack is on the inside only. thank god.

i am assuming the cause of the rust is from a leaky anchor cleat on top the bow and running down the bolt for the last 20 years.

i have never worked with fiberglass is that the best fix or is there something else ???

by the way i'd take that plate and the bow lifting eye out of the boat. than put a center cleat there and seal it good over the hole.

I TOOK OUT THE BOW EYE AND PLATE, AND AM IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING MY FATHER MAKE ME A REPLICA OF THE PLATE.

SORRY I AM STILL A NEWBIE, NOT SURE WHAT A CENTER CLEAT IS ???
