Notched Transom V20's

My 79 V20 has the notched transom. I wish I had the full transom or 25" shaft of some of the newer model V20's. For the guys that have the notched transom what has been your experience? I have a 150 Johnson, Does the V20 sit low in the stern? By the looks of the gallery it appears that almost no one has a notched transom and if they did they filled it.

My 87' has the notched transom for a 20" shaft. I do have a splashwell and it's never been much of a problem.

mine had a notched transom but has been filled. one advantage to 25" is the motor will lift out of the water 100% with a 25" and will leave the bottom of the lower unit in the water with a 20". In really rough water the 20" will allow water to enter the splash well more so than a 25" but really shouldn't matter because the well drains anyway. One big thing is larger HP V6 motors  are now more avail. in 25" shaft. It's harder to find a 20" high HP motor now. Most brand new bass boats now even have a 25" motor on a jack plate. back years ago a long shaft was an odd 22.5" motor. short shafts then were 15" and the average was 20". Now you have the 15",20",22.5",25",30",and some 35" now. So now the average is 25" but heading to the 30's real fast.

If the ocean is rough enough to come over the back you really don't have much business out there anyway!

Then again, sometimes the day starts calm and ends rough. Best advise is to go with 25" transom. The second best advise is if you have a 20" transom, to build a splash wall between the splashwell and cockpit that is designed to keep the water out of the cockpit - much like a full transom.

I originally had the 20" transom and would have built the splash wall if I had went with it. You really shouldn't have much to worry about with a splash wall IMHO.

Though I'm sure the V20 is likely a better arrangment than my 92 Robalo 1820, which had a notched transom and a 25" motor when I drifted for fishing or had to back up for some reason in a swell of any kind the floor got splashed and sometimes very wet, it had a self bailing cockpit and it was supposed to do that apparently so heavy seas would flow right out. I did not like it at all and it is why I decided I would never have a salt water boat again without a full transom. The V20's seem to have a better splashwell arrangement on the ones I've seen so I don't know if it is the same, but the 1987 V20 I sea trialed in New York had the notched transom and a heavy 225 hp motor and when you had a following wave or came off of plane a little too fast it splashed up into the cockpit.

Mulv,

My 76' cuddy still has the notched transom. Hasn't been a real issue. Like Willy said, every once in awhile I'll get a little splash up in the well while drift fishing or backing down. I do plan on doing something with that area one day, maybe a plate that slides down fwd of the splash well.

Mulv, my '74 is notched...most of my boat time is spent on big reservoirs, but last fall, plannin' to do some saltwater, I started on a splash-wall to sit on front of splashwell...I've had it out in Gulf and close-shore before w/no probs...pick your days...watch the forecasts...full-transom or not... ;)...

Rap that big a$$ Honda looks a little to hefty for that low transom boat, why don't we work out a trade, my Johnson 115 new in 2001 for that heavy thing. It should set well on my armstrong bracket. I'll throw in a couple of signed 8x10's of me and the grand Poobah 8)

Gee, Willy...REALLY?...You'd part w/ autographed pics of you and GP for an outboard motor? WOW, whadda DEAL!! But I just can't...I'd feel like I was takin' advantage of someone who just doesn't realize the value of what he's got...then I wouldn't be able to sleep at night...but thanks anyway... ;) ;D...

I have the skill to hold a woman in the state of contiuous orgasm...Willy, w/all the Super Models, I figured you'd be familiar w/that particular technique... ;D :D ;D :D ;D :D...They're real grateful later... ;) 8) ;) 8) ;) 8)...

I was going to write a book, you know a memoir type of thing . Instructional for some. For others like you Rap just something to bring back fond memories ;)
