Pompano Blitz

Sunday was the most epic day I have ever had pompano fishing
didn't get there until noon, last 2 hours of the rising tide We were the only ones on the beach for miles either way

used a new bait called FishGun not sure if that was the cause or the fish were just there

anyway brought these home and 4 stud whiting

all were out of the same class, between 12- 14 inches, no real giants, just perfect eating size

OH.... thank you sooooooo much Phat. It's not enough that the waters around here are still so cold here you can almost walk on it... now you have to go and post pics like that. :bat:

(Seriously, I AM jealous.. Nice haul, well done)

Thanks guys, just trying to keep the fishing section alive.

Blue, the whiting were eaten Sunday night, fried with smoked cheese grits

Then
1 pompano grilled whole Monday night
2 pompanos filleted and pan fried w saluted veggies Tuesday night
2 pompanos filleted and made into tacos with mango salsa for Cinco de Mayo

The remaining 5 went to my daughter and her family and friends

We will be fishing sooooooon!

Those whiting we call croakers.

Whiting here is silver hake. In the 70s-early 80s we used to catch 5 gallon buckets of them at night on the beach in December. Russian draggers came and scooped them up...all but a memory in NJ...

HAHA I think we covered this topic once before hahahaha we're old...hahahaha

we have "Northern Kingfish" that are similar to croaker but have dark bands.

They are all in the drum (croaker) family with Redfish (red drum), Black drum (channel Bass), Weakfish/Seatrout, California White Seabass

Man I miss our Whiting.... Used to put 10-20 of them in my smoker. 18-24 hours later we had the best smoked whiting. Wet smoked they would last a week to 2 weeks with no refrigeration... They never lasted more than a few days before they were gone.... every one eaten.

Disgusting how the draggers absolutely destroyed an entire fishery, while our government just sat on their a$$es and did nothing. :cen: :cen:

This is how old I am!!! I remember when I was small, my father would take me Whiting fishing off Coney Island Pier and then walk along the beach, pick the ones that get washed up on the beach, before they froze. We called them frost or frozen fish then after that, head to Nathans to warm our ICE COLD bodies up and EAT, BBQ pork on a bun, chow mien on a bun, hot dogs and french fries with Nathans orange ade. Then it was back to the pier to freeze some more. Any of you New jersey guy's/women ever fish Long branch Pier for Whiting, that was a great spot also? Those Whiting we caught back them were double the size you see in the stores today, if you see tham at all. Memories!!!!!
