Removeing the foam from around gas tank

Hey guys. I started to remove the foam from around my aluminium tank in my 1979 V20 today. I see some posts that say do not refoam the tank. So I have a couple of questions.

1. Does the foam eat away at an aluminum tank?

2. In 1979 did Wellcraft foam the entire floor or just around the tank.

Thanks.

I had my tank replaced by a professional last yr and he had brackets welded on the new tank in stratigic locations so he could refasten it back without foam , He used some 1/2 or 3/8 rubber pads for reinstallation . I have some pictures I will dig up and post.

Hi I am also thinking about removing the foam and was wondering the same thing ,How can that old foam eat through a alm. tank ..I can see if the tank was made of poly hope the pro's can help....also great question about if wellcraft foamed the whole floor, cause i know if it gets wet it weights a ton

the foam gets wet by water intrusion from above or underneath and becomes waterlogged.foam cant hold back moisture forever before it breaks down and becomes spongelike and staying wet against your aluminum tank will corrode the aluminum. Not a pro just my 2 cents.

THANKS GUYS for all the info one other thing..

I secured two chains to the tank and connected them with a shackle. Then I took the boat to a marina during SLOW business hours and got them to lift it out with the boat hoist. At first it lifted the boat 2 feet off the trailer, then slowly it let go and peeled away. That foam is tough stuff.

It took 15 minutes of time and a launch fee, worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
