Spot Bait

Around here, they are bait stealers much like Pinfish.
Catch them on shrimp, squid or almost anything.
They aren't necessarilly targeted but will do if nothing else is willing.
We get to keep 25 daily and they got to be at least 8".
(trying to find a picture to make sure that's what you're talking about)

You would expect to catch them on Sabaki rigs, once you located them.
They also are targeted like pinfish for catching in traps.
 
Good old fashion night crawlers. just use small long shaft hooks and a small piece. Also tie a double rig a lot of the time you will catch two. Then after you catch them put them on a larger setup and catch the following: (both caught on live spot)

Are those the same as Pilot fish? My daughter is having a blast catching them on litle cripled herrings.
 
we catch them on a very little piece of bloodworm and very small hooks. They are Striped Bass' favorite meal. Usually find them hanging around docks and marinas.
 
A rig tied with 2 #6 snelled hooks and a sinker with a little blood worm will do it.

I have had good luck with the "Fish Bites" fake blood worms.

My Grandfather used to filet them and fry em up, he called them "spot mcnuggets". MMMMMM MMMMMM!

People around where I fish in SC target them for food big time. Matter of fact during the "spot run" as they call it, you can barely find a parking spot in the lot or make it out of the inlet for all of the boats. This and the fact that there are no striped bass to speak of off the coast of SC a lot of people that fish for anything other than "bucket fish" hate spots and do not look forward to the fall run. I for one find it quite amusing because you get to see alot of different types puny lil boats out there! We make the most of it. Heck I've even anchored up with them and broke out the ultralight tackle. Admittedly it was fun but they taste like an old shart in my opinion. I'd rather eat a pinfish (and I have) .:beer:
 
get some unidentified fish in the killie trap at the dock.
could be those but no spot.
about 2-3 inches long.
my boy thinks it may be a baby black drum, since we have been seeing thise a bit more this year.
