Steering arm and Hynautic steering

This Mariner has a stainless steel steering arm that goes through the trim pivot on the motor bracket. I thought that it would come out. The steering is hynautic and the old owner told me that it was original. Their are two dogleg shaped cast parts on either side of the rod. I took the bolts off banged on them, went to the dealer, where he sold me a steering rod cleaning brush, and told me to buy a sacrificial nut to bang on, I've been banging on it but I cant get it out. Has anybody tryed this? I did a search but didnt find any threads?

I got the grease and the brush just let me at it.

with this linkage set-up partially disassembled, can you not "twist" the stainless bar? The twisting action may just free it up a bit ...???

I hate frozen steering arms!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That happened to me once, and only once!! Now I take my steering cable out of the tube every winter!!And reinstall it in the spring!

But I guess some here say that the V20 can't get the cable off with the motor on the boat cause it is to close?

But I have the bracket! ;D

O, did you have a question??

The one I had was a real pain in the @#$!

I ended up having to drill a few holes in the steering tube, and spraying a ton of PB Blaster in the holes over a couple of days.
Let it soak. I sprayed at least 6 times a day to let the stuff get in there.
After that it was moving but slow!! So now I hit it with some heat and banged some more!!

O yea when your arm feels like it is going to fall off get a bigger hammer!! A 3 pound works great!!

Now when you get the rod in the tube and you can't hit it anymore you will have to use something like a old 3/8 extension to bang the rest of the way out. Or anything that is long enough to do the job.

When finished the rod is going to be JUNK and you will need a new one!

I had one friend that had to cut the rod off and then remove the steering tube and replace it!

time & Patience!! is the key with lots of oil!!

I wish you lots of luck my friend!! Been there done that and hate it!!

Vic, try this...get two large adjustable or pipe wrenches and put them on the castings in opposite directions...put a 3' pipe on the handles of the wrenches and pull in opposite directions...sumpin' gonna give... :o...spray liberal amounts of PB Blaster nite before... ;)...

Thanks guys. I knew somebody must have had some experience with this. I thought I was missing a set screw or something. Gotta get some of that PB blaster stuff, and try her again.
