Toggin' 9/30/07

Tautog or blackfish as they are also called are found around rocks, wrecks or other bottom structure. The most common bait around here is live green crabs. Smaller ones we used whole, larger ones are cut in half. It is funny how a half green crab will still try and pinch you.

I went out with my fishing buddy Sunday to try "toggin" for the first time. He hooked up right away after we anchored up near a local landmark, Latimer Lighthouse. In fact, his first hookup was a double-header, both keepers. I was starting to wonder what I was doing wrong after he had 4 in the box and I had caught nothing. I came back strong and finished with 4 decent keepers of my own while he did not get any more. The bite was getting pretty hot when we hit our limit (4 each) and ran out of crabs.

Sadly, my bonehead fishing partner has no clue how to take a picture with a digital camera so the only pictures are the ones I took.

Fish is was delicious for dinner!

Tide was VERY high on our return.....the bridege I pass under was inches from the windshield.

Good job on the tog...I'd like to taste some. Always hear how good it is. Also, on the lake around here I go under bridges that low all the time. Can be scary if there are wakes or waves while under there.

And no Cy, your top and enclosure won't be going under ;D

The clearance was as little as I have ever had. Around low tide I can go under with the bimini up. We looked at it for a while before deciding we had enough room but then we inched up to it real slow. Fortunately there were no waves.

I've seen many a nice bimini top ruined due to unsuspecting inebriated drivers ;D Hope it never happens to me - knock on wood!

So, how did you like togging? Better than fluking?

Congrats Whale!! I am itchin to start Black Fishing ( I'm actually tying rigs as I read this ;D) but I have to put it off a litle for some more stripers, as for when I start, thats all I do!!!!
We get the shaft here, as our real season does not start until October 21st, a sunday @ that. 10 fish bag, but until then it is only 3 :-[

Sean....our limit is 4 each and it does not change. Blue, I think I am still partial to flukin' but toggin' is right up there. We might have gotten lucky but it was a lot easier to catch our limit. Anchored up and never moved......

Nice catch. In Va. I think they have to be 14' min before you can keep them what is it in your area.

It is 14" also. We had a couple in the 14-15" range but most were 17/18" or so....

We had 7 keepers before any shorts and ended up with 3 shorts to 8 keepers. Going to try again on Sunday!

Alright Whale, I think the records around 25lbs,I want to see atleast a 15lbr from you for the contest ;D
