Yup... See? That's what I'm talking about. See how nice and skinny they are? But don't be fooled by them. Inline 6 engines are noted for their torque, so your hole shot is very agressive. Beautiful engines... Good pics...thanks Chart.

(Only thing I'd be worried about is those are Mariner engines. Made by Mercury, but they have a rep for not being top of the line like a Mercury is. I've never had one, so I can't comment other than to say that I've heard they were made with cheaper parts. Maybe one of our engine doctors can comment further)

Got a single tower of power going on my sons V that we are working on.....maybe when he gets a little older we will hang 2 on the back!

mariner was a "saltier" version of the merc. mercury had the rep of made to go fast , not to last. mariners had a few more coats of paint and some stainless fasteners. down here omc was the salt water motor & merc dominated fresh. mariner line changed a lot of that. also i think mariner 40 hp and lower were yamahas.

Ahh.. thanks for the explaination Phat. :news: I knew there was some reason for the different line...

Some say MARINER was designed for saltwater whereas MERCURY was for freshwater, but in all reality it was like JOHNSON and EVINRUDE. Same engine, different name on the side of it. The tower of powers are good engines and LIGHT(weighed right around 300 pounds or a little less for close to 150HP at the flywheel).

I beleive other than the color and the cost .There the same.I've owned mecs and swaped parts with mariners with no problems.

It would be nice, if the engine manufacturers would get weight down on the newer engines. I piloted a friend of mine's 18ft mako one time that had a 150 inline six on it. I did remember the torque and how smooth the engine was.

the motors are marked 115 just below the power head. so they are 115HP right or not? If they are 150HP i might buy them and put one on mine. my 225 is about shot.

they are 115's... the point he was making is that the 150's were available at that weight... same physical size tho

How much would it take to buy em?

not sure on price but to up the power is it just a carb change and possibly reeds? or much more involved. would be a sleeper if easy to modify

Merc's were marked 1150's... Mariners were marked 115's. I've had both a 90hp and a 115 hp and both engines purred. (I still have the 115) They have a dinstinctive sound, and as I've said before they have awesome torque at the prop.

And for those that don't know, they have no separate head. The head is part of the block. It's all one piece. If you have to service the pistons or rods it's thru the bottom. Wierd, but very efficient and weight saving.

I believe they made a 150 tower of power early on back before the V-6's came out. And being an inline 6 crossflow, they are very torquey. Haven't really messed with them much, but I know they are light and there only real downfall was they don't rev out that high.

there is pretty much nothing you can do cheaply to up the power on these... in fact you actually have to detune em a little if you want em to last... they were built for way better gas than we have today so factory spec timing is a little too aggressive for today's fuel.

they are still fine engines but you can't just swap a few parts to make more power..... ALSO parts are NOT easy to come by and many parts just aren't available for em anymore.

Remember these are rated at the powerhead, in 1985 the hp ratings were at the prop, about a 15% hp difference.

The towers of power came out in 90-115-125-135-140-150. They are great motors and not bad on fuel either. Making a lower hp model a higher hp model is tough, differences in carbs, intake, porting and exhaust. These can be found fairly easily, I know 2 guys that have about 20 top's around there shops.

They run crazy good, mass quantities of torque out of the hole!!!

A single 140 or 150 would work good on a V -20. But a pair of 150's would be crazy SWEET!!!:hide:
