Hey Chum.....

Yes. I have an '04 Tacoma with V6 and Auto.
The V6 has enough nuts to tow the V20. I don't believe the 4 is enough though IMO.
Do a little research and you'll find that the V6 automatic gets as good or slightly better gas mileage as the 4 cyl standard shift. It was a no-brainer for me when I was looking. My mileage range is 19-21 mpg.

I was gonna say, I work with a guy who has a 4 cylinder that gets the same mileage as my old truck with the 350.....but Chum let you know so I won't say it.

well i am selling my jeep. if anyone wants it. and looking for a 1990-2002 toyota tacoma V6 SR5 ext cab 5 speed. and i dont want to spend more that $6000. they are out there, but it is like finding a needle in a haystack.:head: dont care about mileage as long as it is under 150K.

Good trucks Cy, had the tacoma TRD like you are describing in the V6 with auto. The four will do it but work too hard and the mileage will suffer. The four will get better mileage with the five speed though than the V6's with either the manual or auto. If towing was not the issue or carrying any heavy loads and mileage was paramount that combo with the four and five speed is tough to beat.

I miss my old JEEP COMANCHE pick-up. It used to get me 21-22 MPG on the highway running 70-75 with the air on. And when I slowed it down to 55 it would get mid to upper 20's, 28 was my best with a tail wind. Not bad for a 4.0L straight 6, that 5 speed really helped out.

well i only tow the boat once maybe twice a week 6 miles round trip on flat ground to the ramp. will the 4 cyl handle that? or work it too hard?

i used to have a 90 V6 SR5 5 speed but I was a dumb :cen: and sold it 5 years ago. now i want one back.

ok lemmee get in on this because i'm looking at the avalanche.
i just found out the tacoma comes in a 4 door.
does it pull the V with no problem?
in other words if i step up at some point to a 24 footer will it pull it?
i need the 4 doors and something to pull the V and more.

I definately could use a good azz kicking. When you're done with me, I'd like to get in on MJ's azz kicking.
I think something in the 24' range will start to seriously push the limits of a Tacoma.

Hey CTT I'll be on Long Island this weekend for a wedding,
I'm not sure where though, should I come over and you can kick my azz?

The new tacoma 4DR V6's are rated at 6500 lbs so 24' may be pushing it. They are sweet rides though, the back seats have more room then a lot of SUV's out there. We looked at them about a year ago as an upgrade from our liberty but couldn't justify the cost. Scarey thing is the used ones were only a grand cheaper than new!!! Talk about holding your value.

Oh they hold there value thats for sure. I had the four door, auto V6 Tacoma TRD package and it was great, I sold it cause I needed a bigger truck for towing and especially for the larger PU bed in the back.
As for towing large items I towed my 21 foot Jayco trailer which weighs about 5000 lbs several times up to NY into the mountains to hunt.
It did it, it worked but I don't care what the rating is it was not good. It worked too hard, the brakes are too small and the biggest problem was wheel base. You need a longer wheel base and bigger brakes to handle that kind of weight safely.
Thats the key word safely.
Cy if you are towing regulary then get the V6 like Chum said, the four will do it but it will be a work out for it. The Toyota trucks are sort of like the Yamaha marine engines, they don't make the most power but they last a long time and are not stressed or tweeked to get that little extra ummph so if you want to tow get the V6

I can't help but laugh every time I see a Toyota "TRD". I always think of "TuRD".

MJ, will you up CTT's posts so he can start his tour....I haven't been in a good brawl in too long......not since I was a real cop anyway.

Toyota just recalled all the 1995 to 2000 Tacoma's so good luck finding one in that range!! They are doing a huge buy back and destroying them all!!
And anything over 2000 is $$$$$ as everyone wants to replace there old one.

Good Luck!

CTT Toyota will not tow a 24 footer!! and why in the world would a good looking guy like you want to drive a ugly azz Avalanche? Get a real truck or a real SUV them things suck.
But I will tell you that a 2002 Silverado 4.8 V8 or 5.3 get the same gas MPG and thats 13 city, 16 hwy I get 14 doing a mix all the time it never changes.

I don;t believe it is "all", but they are having a problem with frame rot in that era and Toyota has stepped up to the plate and is paying top dollar to the trucks that have perforated frames.
