most economical 200hp to put on a v20 cc?

suggestions anyone?cant afford new but will definately be within 10 years old.maybe a optimax of a hpdi,probably wont spend no more than $5000 to $6000 at the most.i got a 89 johnson 200 on there now ,great running motor but it kills me on gph.thanks
 
If the only reason you are getting repowered is gas, i don't think it is worth it. if you spend $6000 to get a 40% increase in fuel mpg, thats only the difference between 2 mpg & 2.8 mpg. if you want something newer, more reliable, not as corroded, etc. i totally understand. i'm partial to merc optimax, i still like a 2 stroke. i think with real world fuel numbers and prices of engines, it is the best bang for the buck. but whatever you do, we love pictures..
 
it's more of a something newer ,more reliable issue.dont get me wrong that motor runs like a champ and hasn't let me down for the 2 years i've owned it. i just figured if i'm gonna put all the time and effort into rebuilding this boat ,i might as well repower it with something newer and more economical if possible .
 
If I was gonna put 6 Gs into another motor, I'd make it a down payment on a new one...w/that much down-stroke you can about write your own deal today...stretch the balance out over as many years as you can and you'll hardly feel 'em...and you KNOW what you got...and one of the things you got is a warranty...Outboard mfgrs and dealers are in a DEALIN' mood right now...I know nothing about your situation, but if you can swing it, that'd be my suggestion...:party:
 
Either get a new one with a GOOD warranty or keep what you have now. Your current engine will be hard to beat in reliabilty by ANY outboard out there. What are you currently using for GPH? MY built 225 that is ported slightly is actually pretty good on fuel. On average I use 11-13 GPH cruising between 3800 and 4400 on my heavy HYDRA-SPORTS. The DFI's and 4 strokes get better milage at idle and slow cruise, but at a fast cruise and WOT they are actually pretty close to each other in fuel burn. If your limiting yourself to used then 03+ EVINRUDES and 04+ OPTIMAX's are the better ones. Also don't forget about the added weight of a DFI and espescially that of a 4 stroke. If going with a 4 stroke keep your HP goals down a bit, personally I would be lloking at a 175 in newer power for a V-20.

opti's will get the best fuel mileage, i would stay away from the fichts, unless you can find a DI or E-tec for cheap, and then the HPDI's are hit or miss.
 
First I agree with the rest, If I had the cash I would go new.

But if its gas your worried about why not go with a good 150?? 200 is over kill for these boats unless you want a go fast boat, which these were not made for in the first place!!

I have a 23' Sea Ox heavy boat!! and all i have is a 175 and it gets great gas and I still cruz at 25+ knots top out at 33 knots.

How many days you think you going to be flying in your boat?? Lay off the throttle, the motor will last longer you beat the boat less and yes you will save gas!

Not to mention the weight factor. I think a 200 hp 4-stroke is going to be way too heavy. My 200 HPDI is pushing it in the weight department. In hindsight, I might have done better with a 150 or 175.
 
I have a 2004 150hp yamaha 2 stroke and it will top out 45-46 mph depending on the load .
My friend has a 225 optimax on his v-20 and he tops out around 50 mph . We burn about the same fuel at cruse , but his rides much lower in the stern due to the added weight .
I would be willing to give up a little hp for signficant weight savings .

sitck with a mid sixe v-6 dont put the big boy on there unless 4mph is your ultimate goal.

Dang Lumber the bottom paint is faded and chipped, the teak is all grayed out, and there is some dust on the windshields.
All right what did you do with Lumbers boat and who the heck are you?
