re-painted motor cover

i meant to post this a while back but got busy and had a 2 week lake Erie trip.
i wanted to re-paint my motor cover so i hit the net and found some help because paying to have it done was going to run me about $300.
well,i stripped it down first and then used sandable primer and applied several coats of it and wet sanded between coats.after that i used several coats of matching evinrude blue paint.after that i applies 4 coats of clear coat with a wet sanding between each coat.since i couldn't purchase new nameplates i had to remove the old ones and strip them down.after that i hand painted the white lettering w/ white enamel paint and dark blue for the background. a local graphics business made some new decals for me and a new gasket finished the job off.i included a before pic of the cover.

Nice Job!!...Jeffmo, that really looks good....nice work on the hand painted letters AND you sure found the right shop to replicate the graphics...

reel,no it was done with spray cans.if i remember right i used 6 cans total.
i made some mistakes on it.if you look the side and rear blue panels aren't at the same level.plus on the front i couldn't match it up to original.the curve at the front corners are compound and the decaling simply wouldn't make the turn w/out turning downward.so i just cut them to end slightly before the front corner.the hardest part honestly was the side red,white & blue stripes and the rear red,white & blue "V". they had to be done with individual stripes of each color w/ the "6" on the rear applied last.putting several drops of dish washing liquid in a bowl of water then wiping it on the surface allows you time to position the decal before it dries.after that you just squeegee from the center outward to remove any air bubbles and excess liquid.

I guess what makes it really jump is the wet sanding and clear coating!!...it's like you can see a "depth of color" to it...from a can??...incredible!!...
